What can we learn from campus leaders, quickly?Western New York/Ontario Chapter Association of College and Research LibrariesRea Devakos, University of Toronto
This session reports on a focus group methodology built on Dervin’s Sense Making communication methodology. Unlike many focus group and other qualitative research methods, this approach delivers in depth, reliable data quickly. Originally piloted by Dr. Dervin at Ohio State, it has been used at the University of Toronto to study information seeking amongst leaders of student journals. Informal campus leaders, including students, are seldom studied by libraries. Yet they are often deeply engaged in the institution and influence the actions and perceptions of others. The session will outline the methodology and highlight a few key results.

3. The document then discusses each lesson in more detail, emphasizing the importance of identifying internal talent, assessing needs accurately to hire the right fit rather than being "star struck," and executing a disciplined selection process.

Glaciers alefaia-petcha kutchaAlessandro FaiaGlaciers are melting worldwide due to climate change. Satellite images provide visible evidence of retreat when comparing images from different time periods. Alpine glaciers have lost around half of their total area between 1850 and 2000. Nearly 60% of glaciers in Spain have already melted, leaving only 21 glaciers remaining in the Pyrenees. Studies from the 1950s predicted that rising carbon dioxide levels from human activity could cause significant melting of ice sheets and rising sea levels. A 4 degree rise in temperature was predicted to eliminate nearly all the world's glaciers. Glacial retreat has impacts such as reducing the reliability of ski areas. Mitigation and adaptation strategies are needed to address the effects of climate change.
Rethinking Development in the Age of Social MediaLeslie ChanThis document discusses how social media and networked technologies are changing concepts of development in the 21st century. It argues that these technologies allow for more collaborative, open, and peer-based models of information sharing that empower local communities. Specifically, it provides examples of how platforms like Wikipedia, Ushahidi, and OpenStreetMap are helping to crowdsource information and map local issues in ways that shift emphasis from top-down organizations to grassroots solutions developed by local people.

También describe cómo funciona la esteganografía digital mediante la sustitución de bits en archivos como imágenes para ocultar mensajes cifrados, y cómo se diferencia de la criptografía al tratar de ocultar la existencia misma de la comunicación.
