Volleyball was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan in Holyoke, Massachusetts as a less strenuous indoor alternative to basketball for the YMCA. The game has since evolved with modifications to the court dimensions, number of players, and specific rules while retaining the overall goal of volleying a ball back and forth over a net.
