The Mojave Desert biome covers parts of southern California, Nevada, Arizona, and Utah. It has a typical basin and range topography surrounded by mountain ranges, leaving it in a rain shadow dependent on water from the Colorado River and groundwater. The desert has over 2,500 species of wildlife and vegetation, many of which are protected, and experiences hot summers over 110°F and mild winters around 80°F. While national parks and state reserves protect over half the land, growth of cities and renewable energy development are threatening habitats and the water supply. Conservation efforts are important to preserve the fragile desert ecosystem.

Saint Petersburg was founded in 1703 by Tsar Peter the Great and served as the capital of the Russian Empire for over 200 years. It has also been known as Petrograd from 1914-1924 and Leningrad from 1924-1991. The city is home to many beautiful palaces, including the Winter Palace which now houses the Hermitage Museum, as well as other notable sites like Saint Isaac's Cathedral. In March 1917, Saint Petersburg lost its status as capital to Moscow after the Russian Revolution deposed Tsar Nicholas II.
