Semantic Web 10 Years from Now:

WILL IT READ MY MIND AND COOK ME
           BREAKFAST?
          Paola Di Maio
      ISWC 2012 Boston, USA
           http://stko.geog.ucsb.edu/sw2022/
THANK YOU!!

- for 20 years of world changingg web (for
making it real and for defending it)
- for accepting my contribution for this
workshop (big honor!)
- for opening up the Semantic Web vision
beyond a narrow viewpoint
- for letting me WRAP UP such a visionary
session summarising the contributions
WISHFUL THINKING! in 10 years
The semantic web will work, and its
architecture will be elegant and transparent

It will be like pervasive thin veil of structure
  and sensemaking wrapping web content

Most web users will be able to benefit from
  it!

It will be user friendly and useful!
MAIN AREAS FOR THE VISION
Online! (it will work and Socio technically
    be transparent) beautiful and useful
Will support cognitive Will be aware and
    enhancement support social innovation
will Validate its output Integrated with the
    (truth, factchecking) sensor web
   Convergence of Annotatable/interactive
    paradigms Sustainable
   Good Interfaces
Interoperable standards Check out the paper
                               http://stko.geog.ucsb.edu/sw2022/sw2022_paper15.pdf
SUMMARIZING AND MAPPING
CONTRIBUTIONS
In the next slide, I summarise the points discussed in my
paper as a table (top row)
and then
I map/plot the other contributions to align the content of the
workshop

1) I merged the points that were very similar
2) Contributions in the workshop seem to loosely
correspond to one, or more than one points in my paper,
however some of the points in the paper are not covered by
other contributions (see the blue columns)
EDITABLE VERSION OF THIS TABLE http://tinyurl.com/8fd762q
A BUBBLE VIEW OF THE
VISION EDITABLE VERSION: http://tinyurl.com/94v34qw
THREE AREAS NOT targeted by
other contributions
ONLINE: Given exponential speed of change
the SW needs to be sustainable and provide
real time capabilities for all.
SUSTAINABLE: The web will be big, which is
ok, provided it is 'sustainable', otherwise we are
designing systems that will be written off at
some point (for a discussion on sustainability
eslewhere)
INTERFACES: to make use of all its
capabilities
THE WHACKY BITS: INTERDISCIPLINARY
CONCEPT DEFINITIONS
COGNITIVE CLIMAX Climax is a figure of speech, a
rethorical and poetical device (Encyclopedia britannica)
Applied to the domain of cognition, it indicates a general
concept for the enhanced state of mind that can be
achieved when optimal knowledge is attained.

Knowledge boundaries dissolution: considering reality
as a whole (read Seve Lehar http://cns-alumni.bu.edu/~slehar/webstuff/book2/Boundaries.
pdf)

Enlightenment: 'perfect' knowledge attainment

(Note: The fact that someone has never experienced a cognitive climax, doesnt
meanthey will not do so in the future)
WILL IT READ MY MIND?
Very likely: IBM, and others have been working
at it for years. A couple of links:
http://mashable.com/2011/12/21/ibm-kevin-brown-mind-reading/
http://edition.cnn.com/2012/06/18/tech/predictive-technology-future/index.html

Scary? Possibly
We should prepare

image: masheable)
AND WILL IT COOK ME
BREAKFAST?
Likely, the capabilities will be there to web
enabled devices through sensor web.

Image: CNN
More importantly:
SW will be moving toward the 'general
  intelligence' paradigm (narrow will be
  narrow)

 Looking at the workshop programme
it looks like the semantic web will try to be
inclusive....
Have a great hands on session!

welcome to edit the diagrams if helpful
