Project aims:
 Map the field across Europe
 Examine individual learning ecologies
 Design best principles and strategies to support equity in
science education outside the classroom.
 Develop self-evaluation tools for learners
 Evaluate a number of transdisciplinary programmes

This study will map practices in 19 EU countries, including in
depth studies in 8 of these countries, covering learners between
9-20 years from various backgrounds including those from
geographically remote, socio-economically disadvantaged,
minority and/or migrant communities

Approach to equity in informal science
education:
 Equity as an overarching process, rather than a goal.
 Stress on understanding science from a cultural perspective.
 Acknowledgement that disengagement in science learning cant be
explained only by individual choices and that structural inequalities play
an important role.
 Need to adopt a systemic thinking approach in order to develop equity-
oriented solutions.

The map data was collected through a 2 round campaign developed by the
SySTEM 2020 partners, who also curated the entries.

 Offers state of the art data about science education outside the
classroom: unique dataset, open data.
 Supports understanding on science education outside the classroom
(research actions).
 Gives visibility and supports collaboration amongst non-formal science
education organisations.

Data might be not totally representative of the field of science education
outside the classroom. Need to acknowledge some biases due to:
 Campaign design.
 Motivation of the organisations to join the map.
 Role of the contact person from the organisation who filled the
map questionnaires.
 The activities reported are a small selection of the organisations
education offerings.

System 2020: Generating strategies to support equity in science education outside the classroom

  • 2. 2 Project aims: Map the field across Europe Examine individual learning ecologies Design best principles and strategies to support equity in science education outside the classroom. Develop self-evaluation tools for learners Evaluate a number of transdisciplinary programmes SYSTEM 2020
  • 3. 3 This study will map practices in 19 EU countries, including in depth studies in 8 of these countries, covering learners between 9-20 years from various backgrounds including those from geographically remote, socio-economically disadvantaged, minority and/or migrant communities SYSTEM 2020

  • 6. 6 Approach to equity in informal science education: Equity as an overarching process, rather than a goal. Stress on understanding science from a cultural perspective. Acknowledgement that disengagement in science learning cant be explained only by individual choices and that structural inequalities play an important role. Need to adopt a systemic thinking approach in order to develop equity- oriented solutions. CO-DESIGN WORKSHOPS ON EQUITY
  • 7. 7 Design strategies around access, diversity and inclusion to support equity in non-formal STEAM education. Challenge: Objective of the workshops: CO-DESIGN WORKSHOPS ON EQUITY Lack of well-accepted criteria for assessing equity in non-formal education.
  • 9. 9 To date of 09.03.2020, the map has a total of 2,879 entries from 19 countries. 1,381 organisations 1,498 activities BACKGROUND: THE SYSTEM 2020 MAP The map data was collected through a 2 round campaign developed by the SySTEM 2020 partners, who also curated the entries.

Supports understanding on science education outside the classroom (research actions). Gives visibility and supports collaboration amongst non-formal science education organisations.   • 11. 1 1 Opportunities & challenges of the SySTEM 2020 map data: Data might be not totally representative of the field of science education outside the classroom. Need to acknowledge some biases due to: Campaign design. Motivation of the organisations to join the map. Role of the contact person from the organisation who filled the map questionnaires.   • #7: In education, equity has been defined as Ensuring that there is a concern with fairness, such that the education of all learners is seen as being of equal importance1. Social justice and fairness are at the center of equity programs and for this reason the emphasis is placed on ensuring everyone has equal opportunities to develop and perform at the best of their capacities. Dismantling the discourses that promote a narrow view of what is science and who is supposed to engage in it is complex and requires a systemic thinking approach. After all, equity is not an end, but as an overarching process that needs to be nurtured at different levels. Thus, systemic equity-oriented designs in science learning outside the classroom need to tackle challenges related to access, diversity and inclusion.

  • #10: The SySTEM 2020 map database contains information about STEM/STEAM organisations and activities from 19 European and Middle East countries. The data has been collected through a two-round campaign conducted by SySTEM 2020 partners, who benchmarked and contacted organisations providing non-formal science education inviting them to join the SySTEM 2020 map by filling two online forms: one to report about the organisation, and another one to report about each of the activities they consider representative of the work they conduct on science education outside the classroom. In addition to the targeted invitations to join the map, the SySTEM 2020 map campaign was also conducted through social media and through communication channels of the SySTEM 2020 project partners. The data was collected during the periods from April to July 2019 and from December 2019 to January 2020. To date of 09.03.2020 the number of entries consisted of: 1381 organizations and 1498 activities. All the data entries have been curated by the SySTEM 2020 project partners.
