The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

네, 없네요. 몇몇 분은 굉장히 당황하신 표정이네요.
이렇게 우리가 흔하게 부르는 노래에도 저작권이 있어요.
여러분 같으면, 만일 여러분이 한정된 예산으로 영화를 만든다 칠 때,
1만 2천불을 내고 이 노래를 쓰시겠어요, 아니면 이 노래 들어가는 장면을 빼시겠어요? 노래를 쓰실 분은 손 들어보세요. 아주 드무네요.
이렇게, 저작권 때문에 문화 활동이 위축될 수 있어요.
#4: 저작권 때문에 노래를 영상에 넣거나, 블로그에 사진을 넣거나, 하는 일이 망설여질 때가 있어요.
가끔은 잘 모르고 올렸다가 저작권법 위반으로 삭제가 되거나 할 때도 있죠.
보고 싶은 방송 영상을 보려고 검색했다가 저작권 걸려서 링크가 내려갔다, 이런 경우를 자주 발견하게 돼요.
제가 사무국에서 일할 때 어떤 어린 학생은요, 인터넷을 검색하다가 네이버 블로그에서 마음에 드는 노래를 발견해서 그 블로그 주인에게 허락을 받고 퍼갔는데
네이버에서 저작권 위반이라면서 제재를 했다고, 왜 이러는 거냐고 저희한테 와서 하소연을 하더라구요.
이 친구는 나름 블로그 주인한테 허락을 받았으니 자기가 할 일을 다 했다고 생각했을텐데,
이게 인정받지 못하니 이해를 못한 것 같더라구요.
무엇보다, 어른도 이해하기 어려운 저작권을 어린 학생에게도 똑같이 적용하고, 나쁜 아이를 만들고 있는 우리가 뭔가 잘못된 건 아닐까? 하는 생각이 들었어요.
저작권에 대한 또 다른 사례를 하나 볼게요.
#5: (노래 잠시 재생)
이 노래는 어떤가요? 무슨 노래인지 아시죠? 전 세계인이 다 아는 노래 ‘강남 스타일’이예요.
전 세계적으로 엄청나게 히트를 한 후에, 여러 매체나 전문가들이 앞다투어 ‘강남 스타일’의 성공 전략을 분석했는데요.
사람들이 인터넷에서 자유롭게 공유하고, 따라하면서 패러디를 만들고, 하는 것을 제재하지 않았기 때문이란 평가가 많아요.
생각해보세요. 다른 나라에서 유튜브에 이 노래에 맞춰 춤 춘 패러디 영상을 올릴 때마다 일일히 저작권을 주장했다면,
이렇게 전 세계인이 보고 웃는 인기 콘텐츠가 될 수 있었을까요?
이렇게, 디지털 시대의 문화의 확산은 저작권 보호를 주장하지 않으며 일부 묵인할 때에 더 효과를 낼 때도 있어요.
#6: 우리가 사는 지금 시대, 특히 인터넷의 세상은 옛날처럼 TV와 시청자 같은 1대다의 커뮤니케이션보다, 이렇게 한명 한명이 배포자이자 수신자가 되고 연결돼있는 다대다의 세상이예요.
우리는 유튜브에 1분에 100시간 분량의 동영상이 올라오고, 한달에 조회되는 영상 시간이 60억시간이 넘는 시대에 살고 있는데요. 우리 거의 모두는 그 동영상의 시청자인 동시에, 내 계정에 영상을 올리는 업로더예요. 이젠 스마트폰도 많이 갖고 계시니까 더 쉽게 이런 일이 일어나죠. 그게 평범한 디지털 시대의 모습이구요.
게다가 파일이란 것은 기존의 재화처럼 쓰면 사라지는 것이 아니라 복제를 하면 무한으로 같은 퀄리티의 파일이 늘어나기 때문에,
유저들 서로간의 나눔에 한계가 있거나 속도가 잦아들지 않고 오히려 가속화됩니다.
공유는 인터넷 사용 활동의 기본이라고 봐도 과언이 아닙니다.
#7: 이 그림은 2005년 인터넷에서 오고간 데이터를 시각화한 지도의 일부예요.
이렇게 촘촘하게 연결된 망처럼, 우리 커뮤니케이션도 서로와 촘촘하게 연결돼있어요.
그치만 아까 설명했던 학생의 경우처럼, 저작권법이 인터넷에서의 공유에 걸림돌이 되기도 해요.
싸이의 경우처럼 묵인을 할 때 더 좋은 일이 생기기도 하구요.
그럼 저작권법이 원래 우리가 인터넷을 자유롭게 쓰지 못하게 하려고 생긴 나쁜 법이냐? 그건 아니겠죠.
원래 저작권의 목적을 저작권법 제1조에서 함께 찾아볼까요?
#8: 저작자의 권리를 보호하고 공정한 이용도 도모하는데, 그 이유는 다
‘문화 및 관련 산업의 향상발전에 이바지’ 하기 위해서라고 합니다.
저작권법이란 본래 문화를 보다 풍성하게 하기 위해 존재한다는 것이죠!
아까 본 사례처럼, 우리의 문화 활동을 억압하기 위해서 존재하는 건 아니예요.
그치만, 워낙 빠른 속도로 기술이나 미디어가 발전하고 변화하고 있고,
법이 그 변화를 따라잡지 못해 앞서 말씀 드린 경우 같은 사례들이 자꾸만 생겨나고 있죠.
#9: 저작물을 이용할 때마다 비용을 받아서 지속적인 창작을 하고 싶은 창작자들도 있지만,
어떤 창작자들은 돈이 아닌 다른 식의 보상을 받고 싶을 수도 있어요. 자기가 원하는 종류의 보상을 구하는 건 저작자의 정당한 권리이구요.
어떤 사람은 많은 사람들이 퍼가서 홍보 효과를 누리고 싶을 수도 있고, 다른 사람들이 자기 작품을 재가공하는 것을 보람되게 느낄 수도 있고요.
아니면 오픈하고 싶은데 일일히 허락 받으러 오는 사람들을 대응할 리소스가 없을 수도 있구요. 이럴 때 손쉽게 이용허락을 내릴 방법이 있어요.
#10: 바로 “크리에이티브 커먼즈 라이선스”입니다. 크리에이티브 커먼즈에서 만든, 저작물을 공유하는 라이선스예요.
한국에선 보통 줄여서 CCL이라고 부릅니다.
CCL은 말하자면 “선-이용허락법” 이라고 볼 수 있어요.
#11: 이 로고들, 블로그 같은 데서 보신 적 있죠?
이 로고들이 CCL을 이루는 조건들인데요.
이 로고를 이리저리 조합해서 ‘내 저작물을 퍼갈 땐 이 조건을 지키면 자유롭게 쓸 수 있다 ‘라는 뜻을 간단한 그림으로 밝히는 거예요.
반대로 이용하는 사람 입장에선, 이 로고들을 보고 ‘이러이러한 걸 지켜주면 자유롭게 써도 되겠네‘라고 이해하면 되겠죠.
#12: 제가 발표 초반에 넣은 이 문구 보신 분 계신가요?
이 문구는 이런 뜻이랍니다:

한 마디로 출처만 밝히면 맘대로 쓰셔도 된다는 뜻이예요.
#13: 한 가지 예시를 들어볼까요?
YEIZON은 현재 가요계에서 활발하게 활동하고 있는 랩퍼, 프로듀서 등이 모여서 만든 프로젝트예요. 멤버 중에 랩퍼 ‘낯선’은 이효리의 유고걸 피쳐링이나 놀러와 같은 곡으로 잘 알려져있고, 다른 멤버들도 모두 유명 아이돌이나 가수들에게 곡을 주고 있거나 직접 활동을 하고 있어요.
YEIZON 멤버들은 기존 가요계에선 할 수 없는 음악적인 실험을 하기 위해 YEIZON을 만들어서, 여기서 만든 음악들을 CCL로 공개하고 SNS에서 알렸어요.
처음엔 저작권료를 안 받는 음악 프로젝트가 얼마나 운영될 수 있을까 하고 걱정했다는데요.
인터넷을 통해 전 세계에서 반응을 얻기 시작해서 홍보비 없이도 홍보효과를 누렸고, 팬들이 퍼가고 리믹스 하며 탄탄한 팬커뮤니티도 얻었고,
그래서 넓은 세계에서 인정 받는 팀이 되었습니다. YEIZON으로선 굉장히 좋은 보상이죠!
#14: CCKOREA에서 이런 YEIZON의 음악을 활용해 CCL 음악 플레이어를 만들기도 했어요. 미리 이용 허락을 내려주셔서 복잡한 허락 절차 없이도 서비스를 만들 수 있었어요~
이 앱 이름은 CC10Musicians고, YEIZON 뿐만 아니라 인도네시아, 이태리, 모로코, 칠레 등 다양한 국가에서 활동하는 CCL 아티스트를 소개하고 있어요. 이들에게 역시 복잡한 허락을 받지 않고 서비스를 만들 수 있었어요. 그냥 네트워킹 차원에서 이런 것을 만들 거니까 예쁘게 봐주세요~ 하는 연락은 했었죠. ㅎㅎ
이렇게 CCL은 다른 사람의 손을 빌어 내 저작물을 멀리 멀리 날라다주기도 하고, 새 옷을 입게 해주기도 합니다.
저작권법에서도 말하고 있는 문화의 향상과 발전은 이런 것 아닐까요?
#15: 예술 저작물 말고도, 여러 가지 분야에서 공유가 일어나고 있어요.
창작자들은 비용 말고 다른 보상을 바라니까 공유를 하는데, 다른 분야들은 왜 공유를 할까요?
교육을 예로 들어볼까요? 교육 자료가 자유롭게 공유 되면? 경제적인 이유 때문에 생기는 교육 격차를 줄일 수 있겠죠.
학술 논문이 웹 상에서 자유롭게 공유 되면? 논문 열람할 때 벽이 하나 사라지면서 많은 사람들이 읽고, 인용도 하고, 이를 바탕으로 한 연구도 폭발적으로 늘어날 수 있겠죠.
정부 데이터는 어떤가요? 시민들의 세금으로 만들어진 공공데이터가 개방 되면 이걸 활용해서 여러 가지를 만들고, 우리 삶이 개선될 수 있을 거예요. 예를 들어 지자체에서 공개한 버스 정보를 기반으로 만들어진 ‘서울버스‘ 같은 경우 말이예요.
#16: 흔히 저작권에 대한 의견을 피력하시는 분들을 보면 주로 강한 목소리들이 주목을 받아요.
오른쪽처럼 모든 저작물 이용은 비용을 지불해야 하며, 지금보다도 더 강력하게 저작권을 보호해야 한다는 쪽이 있구요.
왼쪽처럼 아예 저작권법을 다 지키다간 아무 것도 못할테니 무법천지로 살자 하는 쪽이 있어요.
저작물 이용은 그렇게 막다르게 극단적으로 생각할 주제가 아니예요. 극단적인 주장에는 현실성이 없어요.
저작권은 특히 우리의 인터넷과 문화 향유에 직접적으로 영향을 미치는 주제이니만큼 유연한 사고가 필요해요.
#17: 양극단의 주장에 갇히지 말고 뒤집어서 생각해보면,

이렇게 CC 같은 대안이 존재하고 있습니다.
사실 CCL 운동은 이제 10년도 훌쩍 넘은 운동이예요.
CC 네트워크 내부에서도, 이제는 CCL로 공유하는 것만으로는 충분하지 않으니,
아예 저작권법을 좀 더 공유가 쉽고 공개 콘텐츠를 많이 만들 수 있는 방향으로 개혁해야 한다는 목소리가 많이 나오고 있어요.
#18: 문화란 원래 누릴 때 가장 문화다울 수 있는 것이니까요.
인터넷을 이용하는 것, 그리고 문화를 만들고 누리는 것은 다른 사람이 아니고 여러분과 저 같은 우리 자신인만큼,
우리 스스로가 관심을 갖고 참여해야 해요.
