William Blount was the first governor of the Southwest Territory and established the first temporary capital in Knoxville. He later moved the capital to Nashville, which was named for American Revolutionary War hero Francis Nash. The Treaty of Holston established peace between the Cherokee and United States and guaranteed travel along the Tennessee River. John Sevier was the first and only governor of the lost state of Franklin and was a famous military leader. When Tennessee became a state in 1796, Sevier was elected as its first governor. The three main river systems are the Tennessee, Cumberland, and Mississippi Rivers, which are all connected and were significant for transportation and trade.
