It's all the things you can see, you can measure, you can purchase, you can download. The science of sport is all the tangible, measurable, observable aspects of coaching and athletic performance.
However - the things that have the greatest value in sport - the most enduring - the most important - are the things that are often difficult to see, hard to measure and impossible to buy.
Qualities such as confidence, commitment, mental toughness, resilience, passion, drive, enthusiasm...these qualities are integral to athletic success yet are often overlooked.
These are the "how" and the "why" factors in coaching - the "art" of coaching.
When a coach writes a training session or develops a workout plan, they do so with one under-pinning assumption: that the athlete will perform the workout with the "INTENT" with which it was written.
In other words, it's not the "sets" and the "workload" or the "heart-rate" only that determines the effectiveness of training: it's the coach's ability to teach, to educate and to connect with the athlete and in doing so inspire that athlete to perform the CONTENT with the INTENT with which it was written that makes all the difference.
