As police continue their investigation, the Bata family has offered a $25,000 reward for the
safe return of several artifacts stolen from the Bata Shoe Museum in late January.
Thieves made off with a pair of gold shoes, a gold toe ring and a gold anklet from the
museum located 327 Bloor St. West.
The gold shoes, purportedly worn by an Indian prince, are worth an estimated $160,000.
The gold toe ring is valued at $11,000 while the anklet worth about $45,000.
Prince Nizam Sikandar Jah of Hyderabad wore the shoes sometime in the 19th century. The
anklet bracelet and toe ring date back to the 18th century.
Det.-Const. Dave Dickinson of 52 Division said police are following up on several leads and
are looking at persons of interest.
Elizabeth Semmelhack, museum curator, was shocked by the robbery, but not surprised by what was stolen.
"I do feel that it was the seduction of the gold," she said."The shoes were embroidered with gold wire and the jewellery was in 24k gold. They
looked like they would be worth a great deal of money."
Semmelhack, however, is hopeful the artifacts will be safely returned.
"I hope they (thieves) realize that they have something that would be very hard for other people to appreciate the true value and hopefully
they will be returned," she said.
Police and museum security are investigating just how the artifacts were stolen.
The Bata Shoe Museum has had other robberies including the theft of a pair of sneakers, but nothing like this.
The three artifacts have been on display since June of last year.
