Excited to share insights from my Dissertation Thesis on Multisensory Experience Design in Art Museums, focusing on Nairobi, Kenya! I have to say that this is the work that set me on my current trajectory and led me to my current design philosophy of design for all senses.
Have you been to a #museum, wanted to touch an exhibit and there you saw an injunction, "Please don't touch"....or "Please speak softly",,,,or "Please no eating in the museum".....or "Please don't use strong perfume".... these injunctions have made museums to be mono-sensory experience oriented, alienating the visitors. These injunctions speak volumes of our innate and inherent desire to want to engage holistically with all our #senses with objects. This is a major problem especially in Kenya's museums, which is a paradox with its rich cultural, and anthropological exhibits that require engagement with all the senses.
Inspired by David Howes' insights from Concordia University, my thesis challenges this status quo by exploring historical precedents. Did you know that in the 18th century, museums encouraged multisensory interaction? Today, there's a global shift towards enhancing museum experiences through multisensory #design, yet Kenya's museums often lag behind international standards.
This research isn't just about aesthetics....it's about fostering meaningful, educational, and socially enriching experiences. By embracing multisensory design, museums can bridge cultural divides and create environments where every visitor feels welcomed and engaged. And want to go back.

Thread Art Embroidery of the Viaduct in Stockport
- 1. My vanishing Fabric by Janette Atkinson My image is based on the Viaduct in Stockport. I wanted to create a scene in thread work for my grid search assignment. In my short PowerPoint I wanted to show the vanishing fabric dissolving as it was soaked in water. By manipulating the threads and interlocking, I have created my scene of Stockport.
- 2. My slide show shows the fabric dissolving as you look through each slide. At this stage the dissolving time in cold water took 12 to 15 minutes/
- 3. The dissolving is slowly taking place at this stage I added warm water. The process was slow before I added the warm water.
- 4. You can see how the process of the fabric dissolving has started to impove.
- 5. The vanishing fabric has dissolved around the edges . The main body of vanishing fabric of my scene is taking more time. At this time of 18 minutes I added some hot water to speed up the process. I could start to see that the edges had loose threads. At this stage I realized that I would need to do more over lapping on my stitching.
- 6. Here you can see the some of the thread work has fallen apart, this was the first time using this process. I have done more research and found there is another vanishing fabric called vanishing muslin.
- 10. The vanishing fabric has dissolved and now I have left the fabric to dry. I liked the process but the time it took to stitch my scene as in some places I had to touch up areas of the brick effect. I hadn’t quite used enough stitch to give strength form my scene. I have got some vanishing muslin and using this is much in the dissolving process. The muslin dissolved in just over 4 or 5 minutes.
- 11. Here is my finished image in threads based on the viaduct in Stockport. The time in making my scene took a lot longer that what I thought. In total the time was just 0ver 30 hours. I had to do some repair work so that took me another 2 hours. The extra time added was for the stitch work to my scene I used the vanishing muslin. I died the background using a mixture of shades to create the brick effect shading. The places I visited on my Grid journey took me around Stockport. The building were all a brick red effect. I would of liked to off got a better picture the light was shinning in on me. One thing I have learned is to take extra care with my stitching. With my next piece I will take the time to go over each section to give the support to my design
