Halloween originated 2000 years ago among Celtic pagans in Ireland, England, and France who celebrated Samhain on October 31st to commemorate the boundary between the living and the dead. They wore costumes to avoid recognition by ghosts on this night. In the 7th century, Christianity replaced Samhain with All Saints' Day on November 1st. Trick-or-treating began as poor people begged for soul cakes on All Souls Day. Irish immigrants brought Halloween traditions to America in the 1800s, carving jack-o-lanterns from plentiful pumpkins instead of turnips. Today, Halloween celebrations include wearing costumes, trick-or-treating, and eating candy.
