Learning and Development The Unique Child
Initial Learning:
In the past weeks children have been looking at Africa and different themes within the topic. This week
children will be going on a trip to the Yorkshire Wildlife park as a follow on from last weeks theme of
looking at African animals. So in class we will be focusing on Safaris and children will be thinking about
different things they will need to take with them.
EYFS Curriculum Reference:
Differentiated learning intentions (if appropriate):
All follow on activities will be differentiated for the different abilities within the classroom, when children
are asked to write their own list, lower ability will be required to write single words/phrases whereas the
higher ability will be required to put it into a sentence and perhaps write what they will use it for.

Introduction
Recap the topic of learning for this half term.
Recap that recently we have been looking at
African animals and where they live.
Ask children is they can remember where wild
animals live?
Discuss that Africa is a continent and it is made
up of lots of different countries, which have
different areas in them- such as grasslands,
savannah, forest, jungle.
Ask the children what is happening tomorrow 
school trip, which will be similar to a safari. Does
anyone know what a safari is?
Development
Right, If we are going on a safari, I need your help to what
we will need?
Ask for initial ideas.
Well, I have my own backpack that I need to pack ready for a
safari?
Model their ideas with props and objects packing them into
the backpack/suitcase.
Conclusion
Develop questioning for the objects, asking why
you would take them.. what would they help
with.
E.g.  What will I use the binoculars for?
Why will I need a lunchbox?
Model definition  A safari is when you go on a
trip to see animals in the wild (their natural
surroundings).
Meeting Individual Need (what differentiation strategies will be used to support
specific individuals / groups of children/ extension activities)
High ability  When writing list of equipment that will be needed on the trip, they
can write object and also what it will be used for..
Middle ability  When writing list of things to take on safari, write in full sentences.
Low ability  When writing list of safari items, just write single words/phrases.
Resources (including Health and Safety considerations, human resources)
Backpack

When children leave the carpet area, assess how individuals use their knowledge
to write their own safari list  Tick list.
Evaluation :
Characteristics of Learning : Playing and Exploring, Active Learning and Creating, and Thinking Critically
Childrens Achievements:
Children showed excitement towards the school trip that will be undertaken on
Wednesday the 17th May, and were able to think of different things that they
would take on a safari and their uses.
Feed-Forward Issues:
In the next focus there will be focus on the health and safety aspects of the trip.
