THE MALT COMPANY (INDIA) PVT. LTD
(KHANDSA PLANT)
On the 3rd day of my training, we have visited Khandsa plant at Gurgaon on 29/4/2013.
We have met with Mr. Naresh kumar. He has given me details about Raw material section
i.e. Barely intake, batch making, barely analysis and GIF. The details of visit are as follows –
Barely Intake –
In Barely Intake section we have gained knowledge about the different test which are used to
decide the quality of barely, these are as follows –
1. Visual Inspection – In visual inspection quality of Barley is checked for mould
growth in gunny bags or defective or damaged gunny bags and fungus growth. It is
also checked for other infections related to Barley grains.
2. TCW (Thousand Corn weight) – For the counting of TCW, 100 gm grains are
taken as a sample. From that 100 gm quality grains are selected and 20 gm is grains
are weighted. The no. Of grains in that 20 gm are calculated (x). Then 20000/x will
be the TCW. Minimum TCW count should be 40%.
3. Moisture % - The moisture % of the grains are calculated in the laboratory. The
moisture % should be in between 9.2 to 10.4 %.
4. The other test related to barely like Infested grains, broken grains, Foreign
material are also checked during the process od barely intake.
Batch Making –
According to the customer’s need, batch of different sizes are prepared. Different customers
have different needs, like if one customer want batch of 28 tonne with 40 % TCW, according
to that batch will be provided to that customer.
GIF (Goods Inward Form) -
GIF is the Goods Inward form which contains the information like Truck no., Date, Order
no. It also contains the other details related to the grains like TCW, broken grains, IG,
Foreign material etc.
This all information we have gained in Raw Material section.
LAB SECTION (KHANDSA PLANT) –
The different kind of tests which are used to check the quality of barely are done in
laboratory. The tests are done at three different levels i.e. Raw material testing, In process
and Finished product testing. The different tests involved in these levels are as follows –
Raw Material –
Following tests are done for the testing of Raw material
• TCW
• Foreign Material
• Broken Grains
• Infested Grains
• Moisture%
In process –
During the process of barley malt preparation, following test are done to check the quality of
malt –
• Mean Acrospiral length
• Moisture %
Finished Product –
To check the quality of finished product following tests are conducted in the laboratory –
• Conversion time
• Clarity
• Turbidity
• Extract % on fine crushing
• Filtration rate of first 100ml fine
• Diastic power
• PH of wort
• Friability
• Total nitrogen etc.
These are some of important tests used to check the quality of final finished product.
