The National Emblem of
Ukraine is a trident. Its
history goes back to the
first century A.D.
The Anthem
The Ukrainian
Anthem is a song
called “ Ukraine Has
Not Yet Perished”. Its
lyrics were written by
Pavlo Chubynskyi in
1863 and the same
year it was set to
music by Mykhailo
Verbytskyi.
The National Flag
The National Flag first
appeared in 1848. The
colours are symbolic -
yellow for wheat in the
fields and blue for the sky
above them.

The National and Folk Symbols of Ukraine
The knowledge
of national and
folk symbols is
very important
because it helps
us to know where
we came from
and where to go.

The embroidered shirt ( blouse)
The main folk symbol of
Ukrainians is an embroidered
shirt. It was sewn of white linen.
The collar of it was embroidered
with grey, black, blue and red
threads. The cuffs were
embroidered with another
ornament. People used to say: “
What a Sunday such a white shirt.”
The women's blouse is the oldest
piece of clothes of our foremothers.
At the end of the XI th century
Anna, the daughter of Prince
Volodymyr, founded the first school
of embroideries in Kyiv.

The Ukrainian Chaplet
The Ukrainian chaplet is not
only a decoration, but it is also
a guard. Our foremothers knew
when and how to twine, when
to gather flowers for the
chaplet. The girls began to
wear chaplets at the age of 3.
There were forget-me-nots,
marigolds, periwinkles,
chamomiles in them. They said
that every flower treated a
child. There were 12 flowers in
the chaplet of the grown-up
girl. There were 77 kinds of
chaplets in Ukraine: 40 of them
are medical, 24 are ritual, 13
are magic.

Ukrainian Towels
Bread and towel are the eternal
symbols of hospitality of
Ukrainians. When husbands and
sons went to the war their wives
and mothers gave them towels to
come back alive and healthy and
to remember their native land.
There are different kinds of
towels: styrok is for plates,
benches and a table; utyrachis for
face and hands; pokutnyk is for
walls; vesilnyi is for weddings.
Women embroidered different
ornaments. They used red and
black colours as the symbols of
love and sorrow, blue is the
symbol of blue sky, yellow is the
symbol of health and success.

Pysanky and krashanky
Pysanka is a painted egg with
symbolic signs. Krashanka is
an egg in one colour. A red egg
means happiness, life, love; a
yellow egg means the moon
and stars; a blue egg means
the sky, health and the green
egg means the harvest, the
resurrection of nature.

Motanka-doll
Motanka-doll is a Ukrainian
people’s doll, symbol of
women’s wisdom and family
bounds. Motanka is made by
winding only, it has no face
and keeps the warmth of
people’s hands, love and care
with which it’s made. Not by
chance has motanka-doll no
face. It is either faceless or
there is a cross in the place of
the face representing the solar
sign, the symbol of the Sun. It
is believed to be a symbol of
well-being and a very strong
charm.
