This study examined the difficulties of intermediate algebra students in the Philippines in topics related to radicals and variations. It found that students generally found roots of real numbers, expressions with rational exponents, addition/subtraction of radicals, and multiplication/division of radicals to be easy. However, students found simplifying radical expressions, direct variation, inverse variation, and joint variation to be difficult. The study also found a significant difference in students' difficulties with different radical expression topics, but no significant difference in their difficulties with different variation topics. It recommends providing more practice with simplifying radicals and variations to help students improve in these areas.

Clinical trials established in 2005 the efficacy of Ranibizumab (Lucentis, Genentech) for the treatment of neovascular age-related macular degeneration (wetAMD), the leading cause of legal blindness in the United States.This disease is affecting people over the age of 65 with a prevalence of 1.6 million and 200000 new cases per year in the USA .While awaiting approval for ranibizumab from the Food and Drug Administration, ophthalmologists began treating neovascular AMD with off-label use of bevacizumab (Avastin, Genentech), since the drug had a target specificity similar to that of ranibizumab and was available at low cost for about 50$ per monthly injection Vs 1950$ for Lucentis monthly injection.
Ranibizumab received the FDA approuval in 2006 to treat specifically the wetAMD,there was a huge debate about the cost effectiveness and the reimbursement of Lucentis in comparaison with Avastin for treating the eye disease.
This paper explores the dilemma from different angles.First,it make the emphasize on the need of realizing a head to head comparative study between the two drugs and the means to finance and to launch this study since many roadblocks have been identified.
Then, it explores and analyzes the Genentech reaction facing this problem and their strategy to emphasize on the higher risk of death with Avastin, as compared to Lucentis in one hand and in the other hand their strategy to extend the ophthalmologic indications for Lucentis, including diabetic macula edema (DME).
Finally it explores what value should be put on safety in health technology assessments HTAs by developing that we cant just consider the dollar value of medicine alone but we need to consider the cost of adverse events caused by the treatment and the cost of living with these adverse events

Every day, Non Governmental Organization NGOs is confronted with the lack of access to adequate or affordable medical tools in the field. They face two major challenges the high cost of existing medicines on the one hand, and the absence of appropriate or effective treatments for many of the diseases affecting our patients on the other, we are talking about Neglected Tropical Disease NTD in the Least developed Countries LDCs.
Andrew Witty, Chief Executive Officer of Glaxo Smith Klein (GSK) delivered a speech at the Harvard Business School in Boston on February 2009 entitled Big pharma a catalyst for Change focused on two issues: a) promoting innovation to prevent or treat NTDs in the worlds Least Developed Countries by creating a pharmaceutical patent pool; b) improving the access to medicine in the poorer countries by lowering the prices of GSKs medicines.
In deed, we are assisting a radical change in pharma Business model, we are moving from conflict to collaboration through the Medicines Patent Pool in the hope that it speed up access to newer medicines, and boost initiatives that make use of alternative financing mechanisms in order to develop new, more appropriate treatments that respond to medical needs.
On the other hand the pricing strategy dilemma facing the generic manufacturers and the non inclusion of HIV which is a major neglected disease in LDCs in the patent pool may compromise the success of such business model.
In order to deal with that two issues, GSK should include HIV drugs in their patent pool as other manufacturers and NGO are doing, and concerning the pricing strategy they should emphasize on the high quality of the original drug mandatory to eradicate this NTDs and communicate more on the fact that GSK will invest 20% of these drugs profit to improve the infrastructure of these LDCs.

Every day, Non Governmental Organization NGOs is confronted with the lack of access to adequate or affordable medical tools in the field. They face two major challenges the high cost of existing medicines on the one hand, and the absence of appropriate or effective treatments for many of the diseases affecting our patients on the other, we are talking about Neglected Tropical Disease NTD in the Least developed Countries LDCs.
Andrew Witty, Chief Executive Officer of Glaxo Smith Klein (GSK) delivered a speech at the Harvard Business School in Boston on February 2009 entitled Big pharma a catalyst for Change focused on two issues: a) promoting innovation to prevent or treat NTDs in the worlds Least Developed Countries by creating a pharmaceutical patent pool; b) improving the access to medicine in the poorer countries by lowering the prices of GSKs medicines.
In deed, we are assisting a radical change in pharma Business model, we are moving from conflict to collaboration through the Medicines Patent Pool in the hope that it speed up access to newer medicines, and boost initiatives that make use of alternative financing mechanisms in order to develop new, more appropriate treatments that respond to medical needs.
On the other hand the pricing strategy dilemma facing the generic manufacturers and the non inclusion of HIV which is a major neglected disease in LDCs in the patent pool may compromise the success of such business model.
In order to deal with that two issues, GSK should include HIV drugs in their patent pool as other manufacturers and NGO are doing, and concerning the pricing strategy they should emphasize on the high quality of the original drug mandatory to eradicate this NTDs and communicate more on the fact that GSK will invest 20% of these drugs profit to improve the infrastructure of these LDCs.
