• #3: Section of a panoramic painting of the Battle of Borodino made in the early 1900s It’s a 360 degree mural and it’s one of the earliest attempts of trying to fill the viewer’s vision and make you think you’re somewhere else.
• #4: Charles Wheatstone in 1838 made this thing called a stereoscope because he did research on how the brain and eyes perceive depth. Uses two slightly altered images and you hold the device up to your face and it gives you a sense of depth. This is used widely in VR now because usually those big headsets have two separate screens for each eye and it kind of plays with your brain to make you see depth properly.
• #5: Speaking of headsets, in 1960 Morton Heilig made the first VR head-mounted display. He called it the Telesphere Mask. You put the mask thing on and look at the two images, one for each eye. It was pretty rudimentary but it was the first step towards a lot of other innovation. Motion tracking is basically when, you move your head and the software follows you around so you can control where in the VR space you’re looking. In 1961, these developers from Philco Corp made their “Headsight” with the first motion tracking properties. Actually made first for military training, not really for VR.
• #6: So from left to right, these are SEGA’s VR glasses for the SEGA Genesis in 1993 and then the Nintendo Virtual Boy in 1995. Mainly right now, the game companies are the big players in the VR world, which makes sense because actve immersion in the game is pretty sweet. So you use these headsets and use some form of remote to control movement but you can move your head and look around with motion tracking.
• #7: So here are some of the top VR devices currently on the markets. You’ve noticed I’ve included pricing because these things are pretty expensive because they’re not just toys, they’re pretty advanced pieces of software. Again, these are really pushed for by the gaming industry. Oculus Rift - It’s like a headset that you can use to hook up to most PC games that are made for it and you basically just play the game inside the headset but you use a controller or keyboard. Sony - Pretty much similar to the Oculus but made by Sony for their PlayStation. All of these have their perks and quirks really. Samsung gear- it’s less expensive because it’s a different concept. You pop in your phone and you can watch specially-made VR videos or other apps in your own virtual reality. This is much more portable than the rest of the, and really cool for day-to-day stuff. HTC - My personal favorite is the HTC Vive from what I’ve seen of it. You basically map out a whole room in your house and set up the hardware and such and you put on the headset, use these hand-held controllers in each hand, and get put into a world. You can walk around your room and be in the world and control your experience. It’s so not portable because you need a whole room, but this is what makes the HTC so powerful. Two biggest are the Occulus and the HTC Vive

• #13: End with something cool and amazing. Google has created this software for the HTC Vive You basically get to paint in 3D as shown by these guys Select any colour and just paint what you want with a brush, Since it’s with the HTC, you can work in the round and make whole 3D rooms with art in it. It’s like sculpting with paint. I wanted to end on this because it’s really amazing and it just shows how Artists and art have been at the cutting edge of VR tech and how the evolution of technology and media just makes us able to do art in so many new and amazing ways.
