Globalization has created greater divisions between the rich and poor according to the document. Further, while social movements and protests express the desires of the poor, their demands are often modulated to align with powerful existing institutions rather than creating meaningful change.

Greater foreign investment in many countries means more workers are needed. Increased access to information through technology has exposed more rural poor to opportunities elsewhere. The United States is a particularly interesting example. The strong focus in American society on the rights of the individual is shaped by a long history of revolt by the people against oppressions of different kinds throughout their history against slavery, segregation, institutionalised racism, sexism and homophobia, unjust wars and interventions, and outright illegal invasions. These voices of dissent were crucial in letting the government know that the people they rule over will not stand for illegal and oppressive actions being conducted in their name. 油 Social movements are also gaining a globalisation of their own. Worldwide solidarity on certain issues is connecting people beyond borders, pushing towards Badious idea of the One World. Connections are being forged despite differences in cultural identities, religion and socio-economic statuses. Individual contexts are becoming integrated into the idea of an interconnected, interdependent human society that is not satisfied accepting that, to paraphrase the famous quote, the rich do as they will and the poor suffer what they must.

In the Middle East, people of all ages are demonstrating on the streets. They are being shot at, whilst in the US the absence of conscription and the easy separation an individual can experience from political life is dwindling anti-war activism to little more than a sentiment. Whilst previous decades saw widespread peace marches, rallies, upheavals and riots, today activism in the Western world is largely confined to small dedicated groups of leftists of different kinds. But this is not simply to be attributed to apathy the changing nature of warfare as well as political and legal life is very much responsible. In the US, there was widespread disapproval of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. But with the changing nature of warfare, it is increasingly easy for the government to shelter its population from the war. Furthermore, new laws such as the Patriot Act make resistance to the war a very dangerous business.
