What’s Your Project? Little Helpers Pittsford/ROC
When Tran Bui Smith and her family moved from Memphis to Pittsford for her husband’s new career a year ago, she
didn’t want to give up one tradition they had started—involvement in Little Helpers, a volunteer group for kids that
teaches them to give back to the community.
“It teaches life lessons with the children and is good for me, too,” Smith said.
In August, Little Helpers Pittsford/ROC will be holding a month-long book drive for underprivileged children at Henry
W. Longfellow School No. 36 in Rochester. Beforehand, they’re encouraging families to collect gently used children’s
books and throw a pajama book party, including story time, milk and cookies and a bookmark craft, explaining the
project to the kids. Smith tries to make each project a full experience with a beginning, middle and end.
“The main thing for me is to not make it an event where you just show up and do something and then leave,” she
said.
Smith, 42, started the Little Helpers Pittsford/ROC chapter with her 8-year-old son Jackson and 5-year-old daughter
Ava in 2012. In their first month of volunteering they did two projects. The kids made baked goods and handmade
cards and delivered them to the Pittsford Fire Department on 9/11. They also cleaned, sorted and organized books in
the library at the Ronald McDonald House in Rochester. Now Smith comes up with one child-friendly project per
month.
“For me it’s teaching compassion,” she said. “Part of being a parent is teaching respect. Selfishly as a parent, we
want them to be kind-hearted people.”
Little Helpers has grown to about 10 families, and over time Smith has also witnessed a change in the children
involved. At first they were scared going into certain neighborhoods, but she loves watching how they interact with
people now, Smith said. She believes the kids don’t see disadvantage, they just see people.
“It gives them confidence later in life,” she said. “Connecting with others, you truly are walking in their shoes.”
As Little Helpers Pittsford/ROC continues to grow Smith remains optimistic about their efforts.
“I’m happy with two families, 10 families, 20 families,” she said. “To me it’s not so much the numbers; it’s the heart
that people have when they show up to give.”
