MISSION
Greater City builds a relational support network while providing hot, healthy, home-cooked
meals to long-term residents of local motels who live on the edge of homelessness.
VISION
GC informs, mobilizes, and uni鍖es the Williamsburg community to respond in a multifaceted
strategy to the poverty in our city, working in collaboration with organizations already
existing in order to maximize impact. As we receive support from local churches, businesses,
and organizations, the student volunteers of GC form lasting connections with long-term
residents of local motels, who live on the edge of homelessness, ultimately improving lives
physically, relationally, and spiritually. Our mission in Williamsburg will provide an adaptable
prototype for other communities to implement, taking steps to eliminate socioeconomic
barriers and create a genuine sense of community.
VALUES
The Gospel of Jesus Christ inspires the mission, vision, and strategy of Greater City. We
believe we are answering Gods call to stand with the poor, lift up the marginalized, and love
all people. We serve our neighbors relationally, not transactionally, because we know
relationships have a stronger impact. Williamsburg is stronger together, and we are
passionate about connecting our whole community.
STRATEGY & RESULTS
2015-2016
I have never met people so dedicated to love.
- A GC friend in need
Its all about people. Over the past year, GC has served over 1,500 nutritious, tasty
meals to our neighbors in need, and we have made great strides in connecting
disparate segments of the Williamsburg community.
GC began with an examination of poverty and homelessness in Williamsburgand existing
efforts to combat itthrough countless meetings with community leaders, volunteering with
local nonpro鍖ts, and independent observation. We met with leaders of virtually every
nonpro鍖t in the area focused on this issue, every campus minister at W&M, and the pastors
or leaders of more than 20 local churches. We also connected with local businesses
individually and through the Williamsburg Economic Development Authoritys monthly
Round Table event.

Executive Summary
More than 50 students at William & Mary from many backgrounds have collectively
volunteered more than 1,500 hours through Greater City since August. With the support of
our community15 churches of numerous denominations, local businesses like Aromas and
the Williamsburg Farmers Market, and individual community membersGC has provided
around 1,500 meals since August. For our friends in need, many of whom are single parents,
each meal provided is an opportunity to alleviate some of the stress of providing for a family
in the midst of 鍖nancial hardship.
Food is great, but friendship is better. At the Quarterpath Inn, residents who were cautious
during our initial visits have opened up their lives to us as we have become a regular
presence at the motel. A single father of three children was skeptical of our intentions at 鍖rst.
As we spent more time with his family each week, though, getting to know him and jumping
rope with his kids, we cultivated a relationship that led to him inviting our team to his familys
new apartment when he was 鍖nally able to move them out of the motel. Friendships like
these are why we spend two hours at the motels every Saturday.
Conversation and prayer have been a catalyst in the Quarterpath and Pineapple
communities, leading to renewed optimism from our friends in need, as well as the
development of an open, trusting, and loving community. The disposition of one friend in
need who experiences many health issues has completely transformed since we 鍖rst began
visiting him. Short, awkward small-talk has become rich, heart-to-heart conversation 鍖lled
with laughter and smiles.
Another one of our friends in need recently told us that she is so glad to have us as a part of
the family. Seeing our love reciprocated by residents af鍖rms Greater Citys role as a
compassionate and companionate ally to the homeless population in Williamsburg, and
inspires us to continue pursuing this mission. We plan to establish ourselves at a third motel
by October 2016.
Greater City has also served beyond our general operations. We hosted a workshop on
relational service at the Active Citizens Conference, served as a Shelter Partner with the
COFM winter shelter, and will host a small-scale poverty and homelessness awareness and
advocacy week this month to be followed by a large-scale, multilateral advocacy and
awareness week in September 2016.
