Jesus had to die for two main reasons: 1) Because of God's divine nature as perfectly holy, just, and merciful, God must condemn sin and punish it but also provide redemption. Jesus' death satisfied all of God's demands. 2) Because of human need - as a result of sin, all humans needed redemption but were unfit and unable to redeem themselves, so the sinless Jesus was needed to atone for sin and make possible things like the New Covenant and redemption through his blood. The benefits of Jesus' death are wonderful but also conditional, as they require obedience on the part of humans.
