Sarah Maximiek presents on using Google Voice for reference services at Binghamton University Libraries. The libraries serve a large student population across three campuses. Google Voice allows the libraries to provide a texting reference service through a single centralized phone number. Some benefits of Google Voice include its free cost, ability to transcribe voicemails to text, and having an online inbox to respond to texts. However, there are also some limitations, such as not having offline access and potential incompatibility with the university's Google Apps. In its initial soft launch, the libraries received 56 text messages, which was 1% of total reference transactions.
