The document proposes an Intelligent Traffic Signal system (ITS) that uses wireless acoustic sensors to prioritize emergency vehicles at intersections. The ITS provides immediate passage through intersections for priority vehicles like ambulances, fire trucks, and police cars. It works by deploying acoustic sensors on the sides of roads up to 400 meters from intersections. The sensors can differentiate between emergency vehicle sirens at 128dB and regular transportation vehicles at 86dB. When an emergency vehicle is detected, the sensors communicate wirelessly to controllers at intersections, which provide a green light down the vehicle's lane to eliminate waiting at red lights. The system creates a fully automated, inexpensive way to prioritize emergency vehicles using existing traffic light infrastructure for the benefit of traffic flow
