Biertan is a commune in central Romania composed of three villages, each with a fortified church. The fortified church in Biertan was the see of the Lutheran Evangelical Bishop in Transylvania from 1572 to 1867. Between the 15th and 16th centuries, a small fortified church was constructed and developed in Biertan. In 1993, Biertan's fortified church was included on the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list for its historical and architectural significance.
