The National Guard traces its origins back to 1636 when the Massachusetts legislature ordered the organization of militia companies in the towns around Boston into three regiments to defend the lives and liberties of the colonists. These regiments established in 1636 are considered the founding of the National Guard. Some of the oldest units in the US military descended from these original regiments, including the 181st Infantry and 101st Field Artillery of Massachusetts. Throughout American history, National Guard units have fought in all major wars, from the Revolutionary War to today's overseas conflicts, playing an important dual role in both national defense and service to their local communities. After nearly four centuries, the National Guard continues to build on its proud heritage as a crucial part of America's defense.
