Casco developed a blueprint for professional success. The St. Louis architecture and engineering firm employs a flexible organizational structure that allows staffers to grow within the company. This structure has allowed employees to move from one department to another and to rise from entry-level posts to management positions. It also helped the firm to be named as one of the Best Places to Work in the Professional Development category.   "Everyone has potential, and a lot of the time people don't fit into a niche where they are placed," said J.C. Alberts, president of Casco. "People who have performed marginally in some positions can blossom in others, if given the opportunity." Specifically, CASCO promotes from within where possible, reshuffles employees who are looking for a job change or not hitting stride at certain positions and allows employees to create new positions within unserved areas of the firm.  Pat Ernst came to Casco as a temporary employee and has risen to marketing manager. The climb was tough work, she said, but it has been rewarding. "When you see the need for a new position, you have to submit your idea of a new position to (management), and you also have to prove it," she said. "It requires a lot of effort, and in some instances you will have to do both jobs for a few months. But you reap the rewards of it with growth in yourself and by moving up in the company." One of Casco's notable qualities is its determination to retain employees. To promote this, Casco does not have a personnel department. Instead, it has a professional development coordinating committee that holds two employee seminars each month, dealing with professional development or technical issues. Consistent with its unique structure, employee salary increases are based on a peer review system, where co-workers rank each other on job performance. Employees take this review system seriously.
