Henry Ford Health System's Corporate IT department offers an in-house ITIL Foundation certification boot camp for its employees. Over 250 employees have been certified through this program at no cost to them other than the exam fee. To generate additional revenue, a separate but identical course is now being offered to external non-employee students. The fees from the external students will fund the internal employee classes, with just one external class supporting the internal classes for an entire year. The program was created by IT program manager Tamela Wilks and is advocated by VP and CTO John Hendricks as it provides positive financial benefits to the health system.

New IT initiative generates revenue, benefits System Henry Ford Health Systems Corporate Information Technology (IT) Services in-house, accredited 2-day education program for IT Service Management (ITSM), known as the Instructor-Led ITIL速 Foundation Certification Boot Camp was developed for its own IT professionals and has been available quarterly to employees on HFHS University since 2010. ITSM is a process-based practice that helps align the delivery of information technology services with needs of the business or enterprise, and which emphasizes the benefits of those services to customers. This fits very well with the ongoing One Henry Ford initiative to give high value to its customers while integrating services and processes across the System. More than 250 Henry Ford IT professionals have been certified by this Corporate IT program. The cost of the certification class is free to Henry Ford employees. They need only pay for the certification exam.
- 2. Now, in move that will generate revenue for reinvestment in Henry Ford, a separate course for external non-employee students is being offered. The cost to be charged the students in the external class, which also will be held quarterly, will fund the Henry Ford employees classes. The fees from just one external class support the internal System classes for 12 months. The idea to offer the class to both internal and external students was the brainchild of IT Program Manager Tamela Wilks, the Systems expert instructor for the 2-day certification course. Wilks responsibilities include maintaining course accreditation, designing, developing and publishing the course material and HFHS course workbook; as well as course management with HFHS University, among other duties. HFHS Corporate IT is fortunate to have the in-house expertise to offer this coveted IT Certification. Since a major part of my job is focused on identifying Continual Service Improvement opportunities, it was a natural fit to open our doors to external students and leverage our capabilities. Students will come from all over Southeastern Michigan to participate in the course and tour the newly renovated Henry Ford Information Technology Center (HFITC). The program is the unique for a health care organization and will benefit the health system with brand recognition, showcase world class IT Services and generate revenue for reinvestment in additional ITSM advancements Wilks says that the external students, who will pay $995 for their class, still save more than $1,000 by taking the course through Henry Ford, rather than through another instructional entity. John Hendricks, vice president and IT chief technology officer, Henry Ford Health System, who is a sponsor of the program, is a strong advocate of Wilks marketing of the class to external students, because the profit from those classes impacts the System in positive ways. This is an exciting time for Corporate IT Services and I am delighted to offer this system this exciting new line of business. John is an amazing partner and I am looking forward to all that we can accomplish together!
