- 1. Lincoln, NE Hailing from Nebraska was something I never identified as myself. Conservative, rural and slow paced, the state never felt like home. In a cruel twist of fate, the job of my dreams opened up in its capitol city and I moved back. In a crueler twist of fate, I was laid off from that job in the middle of the recession.
- 2. Lincoln, NE After a year of depleting my bank account, constant rejection and countless everything happens for a reason discussions, I felt lost. Being laid off was something I never wanted to define me, but its changed me more than any other moment. At a time where I felt my life was becoming unimportant, I found I was simply just living it without significance.
- 3. Omaha, NE I volunteered at Big Omaha, an event celebrating the talent of the Midwest, and was introduced to an entire world of people who changed their life to be a life they loved. I was taught that the strong ones in life fight for happiness, the others convince themselves its already happening.

I thought of the job I lost in Nebraska, and realized the person who sat in that office doesnt exist anymore. I decided to create a life I loved, not one I thought I had to live.
- 6. Seattle, WA I tracked down people I wanted to meet and took them to coffee. I learned from their stories, gained from their knowledge. I was simply looking for one thing: inspiration.
- 7. Lincoln, NE Im not going to tell you that life after being laid off has a fairy tale ending. Im still struggling, still being rejected. But Ive changed and discovered what passion really means to me and Im more resilient than I ever thought was possible. As much as I have resisted my Midwestern roots, this year has taught me that I am a true Nebraskan. That is an identity I will carry proudly into my next adventure.
