- The title "Noli Me Tangere" comes from a Latin phrase meaning "touch me not" that Jesus says to Mary Magdalene in the Bible. - Rizal was inspired to write a novel about the Philippines after reading Uncle Tom's Cabin. He proposed the idea to fellow Filipinos in Madrid in 1884 but the project did not materialize. - Rizal wrote the Noli Me Tangere alone between 1884-1886 while traveling through Madrid, Paris, and Germany. He nearly destroyed the manuscript while ill and penniless in Berlin before his friend Maximo Viola funded its publication.

End of 1884, Rizal began writing the novel in Madrid and finished about one- half of it. In Paris He continued writing the novel (Finishing one-half of the second half) In Germany He finished the last fourth of the novel.
In Wilhemsfeld (April-June 1886) He wrote the last few chapters of Noli In Berlin (Winterdays of February 1886) Rizal made the final revisions on the manuscript of the Noli.
What happened to Rizal because of sick and penniles? In a momentary fit of desperation, he almost hurled it into the flames. I did not believe that the Noli Me Tangere would ever be published when I was in Berlin, broken-hearted, weaked, and discouraged form hunger and despiration. I was on the point of throwing my work into the fire as a thing accursed and fit only to die.

VIOLA, Savior of the Noli Maximo Viola , who gave him the necessary funds to publish the novel, Noli me Tangere was published. Viola loaned Rizal money for publishing and for Rizals living expenses. With that, Rizal and Viola happily celebrated the Christmas of 1886 in Berlin.
During the printing of the Noli, the chief of police Berlin paid a sudden visit to Rizal boarding house . The chief asked for his passport, but Rizal couldnt show any. The chief told him to secure passport within 4 days, otherwise he would be deported. Rizal failed in obtaining his passport and presented himself at the German police office, apologizing for his failure.
After Rizal put the finishing touches on his novel. He deleted certain passages in his manuscript, including a whole chapter of Elias and Salome March 21, 1887 The Noli was finally finished and ready for printing. They went to different printing shops in Berlin to survey the cost of printing. Berliner Buchdruck-Action- Gesselschacft Printing shop they found which charged the lowest rate, that is, 300 pesos for 2,000 copies of the novel.
