28575389890Costumes & propsThe main character is dressed in her pyjamas and a dressing gown for the duration of the title sequence. This can be seen as a safety blanket for the mother because she feels as if this is the main object that is protecting her from coming to terms with reality and the loss of her child.
We used the cereal and the child’s bowl, bib and spoon (the screen grab on the left hand side) on the table to reveal a hollow absence because the mother is still carrying out the daily routine she used to do when her child was there. This reflects haunting and brings a psychological element to our horror film because it seems as though she will also be ‘hollow’ if she does not complete these tasks which enables her to get through the day.The man carrying the box is dressed in black which makes him seem mysterious and causes an interest for the audience to find out what role he is playing in the storyline. His lack of distinct clothing with no obvious logos creates anonymity to his character, making him seem even more mystifying.
The box is wrapped in blue wrapping paper; this could represent the fact that it’s related to the child as blue is commonly linked to baby boy’s. The wrapping paper suggests that this box is a gift/present; presents are filled with nice surprises however this box is filled with a shocking surprise.
To improve this factor of our opening title sequence, we could have added ‘missing’ newspaper articles sparsely scattered around the house which would have made the whereabouts of the little boy more known to the audience.
3419475405765Special effectsThe main special effect we used was when the mother was recalling a memory of her and her son playing with his teddy bear. The effect we used was a filter called ‘dream’ because we wanted it to seem as though it was a distant memory and it was the best filter which gave that effect.
Also, we liked the way it was slightly blurring the image as it makes it seem as the mothers memories of her son are becoming hazy and it could accentuate emotions which emphasises feelings of separation and loss.
To improve it, the little boy could have worn the same shirt in the flashback as the one we saw when the mother was laying his clothes on his bed. This would have been better because it allows the audience to make a connection.
