Flexible Work Practices A report on Flexible work practices prepared by Lucinda Clutterbuck Date: Monday, July 27, 2009
Flexible work practices in a small business Lucinda and Ray have been a the co directors of a small production company for 20 years. Their responsibilities are many and varied, without flexible work practices their company would not be viable.
The small business as an employer As a small production company we employ people on a job by job basis. We use trusted freelance employees. We rely on a family network. We use a cottage industry approach to jobs. We offer job satisfaction. Our employees are expected to be self reliant.
Advantages as an employee Flexible working hours. Our employees are asked to charge by the hour so that we can use them when and how we need them. On this job we employed an events manager and freelance designer to manage an event which took place in the evening and coordinated artists from France who attended the event via skype cameras. The job satisfaction was high and the event was a celebration.
Part-time work. Offering people Part-time work makes it possible for us to get the help we need.  Our jobs are small and complex, we can not always afford a fulltime assistant.  On this event I employed my nephew part time as a runner.  This allowed him to keep his other part time job without jeopardizing his steady income and I got the extra help I needed.
Job Sharing As Directors of a small production company our work includes overseas travel. When one director is overseas, the other director must keep the office running. Job sharing enables us to keep our small operation going in tough times.
Working from home Working from home can have disadvantages. OH&s Working from home with the use of skype can mean that work never stops. Mental Health One or other of the job sharing directors working at home in different countries may suffer from exhaustion!
Advantages as an employer In a small production company FWPs : Allow us to expand and contract as the work flow dictates. Allow us to enjoy the benefits of contact with a variety of creative employees and colleagues. Keep our overheads down. Allow us freedom from office politics. Allow us mental health days when necessary. Allow us to job share when necessary. Allows us to work from home.
Conclusions The advantages of FWPs far outway what ever disadvantages that may arise when using FWPs. Older Peoples input. Job satisfaction. Employee loyalty. When knock off time comes, you are already at home!
