The Numidia was a steamship built in 1901 that ran aground on Big Brothers Island in the Red Sea after the officer of the watch likely fell asleep and failed to notice the island. The 6,399 ton steamship was 137.4 meters long and powered by a triple expansion steam engine. After running aground on July 20, 1901 near the island's lighthouse, the master supervised the salvage of most of the 7,000 ton cargo before the ship finally sank. At the formal inquiry, the court determined the officer of the watch had fallen asleep and suspended his certificate for 9 months.
