This document discusses an outreach plan to promote conservation practices among farmers in the Lower Fox River Watershed. The plan includes field days targeting different audiences, as well as placing signs on fields of farmers implementing conservation practices to encourage social norms around water quality protection. A social impact study will evaluate the effects of the outreach efforts, including interviews with farmers and a social network analysis. Issues in the watershed include high levels of total phosphorus and suspended solids that conservation agriculture aims to help address.
This document discusses how individuals curate their online identities and digital footprints on social media, and how this impacts opportunities in education and employment. It notes that academics have studied how people represent themselves differently online than in physical reality. Additionally, it outlines how educational institutions, employers, and recruiters now routinely check applicants' social media to learn more about them, with some finding online content that negatively affects prospects. The document stresses the importance for individuals to manage their social media presence carefully to avoid potential negative consequences.

This document discusses the public nature of participating online for learning. It notes that posting content online, even just to friends, means it is not truly private. It also discusses how participating online can mean doing so in semi-public spaces where one's identity and work is visible. The document outlines some of the challenges this public nature introduces, such as managing one's online identity and ensuring safe spaces exist for learning and making mistakes. It emphasizes the importance of establishing trust online and considering the student experience of participating publicly.

An outbreak of Salmonella Typhimurium occurred in The Dalles, Oregon in 1984, infecting 751 people total over two waves. The outbreak started on September 9th and lasted through the 18th for the first wave. The outbreak was traced back to contaminated raw milk from a local dairy farm. Officials investigated the farm and identified problems with sanitation that likely led to the contamination.

The document summarizes the findings of a 2014 report on diversity in environmental organizations. It found that despite increasing racial diversity in the US, environmental organizations and agencies have not increased diversity beyond 12-16%, due to unconscious bias and insular recruiting. Recommendations include organizations tracking diversity data, integrating diversity goals into performance reviews, and allocating sustained resources for diversity initiatives. The Green 2.0 coalition works to address these issues and increase transparency around diversity in the field through partnerships with GuideStar and foundations.

Specifically, after facing rejections from elections and productions, she organized climate strikes and a group called SGS For Future to take action on environmental issues. Her leadership and perseverance allowed her to overcome challenges and create positive change. The document discusses how class size matters for student learning and teaching. It references a study called Project STAR that showed students behave better and learn more when class sizes are smaller, as it allows for less hiding and more involvement. Smaller class sizes were also proven to be important for reducing classroom management issues and improving student performance. The document argues that classrooms are often too packed with students, making it difficult for learning to occur and for schools to provide necessary resources.

It encourages youth to choose a cause they care about, speak up about it using various mediums, find ways to utilize their skills and talents, collaborate with others to maximize resources, do research before trying to fill gaps, network extensively, and get creative with possibilities only limited by their imagination. The document was presented at the Raffles Community Leaders' Forum on June 8, 2009.

It outlines 8 different types of advocacy blogs, from mobilizing for events to investigative reporting to fundraising. The document discusses the concepts of "ethical food" and "ethicurean". It outlines the mass production dilemmas facing the food system and different certifications and policies used to govern ethical food. An ethicurean aims to consume food ethically while considering environmental and animal welfare impacts. Slow Food and fair trade movements also aim to shorten supply chains and transform inequitable conditions for food producers. While legislation and certification aim to incentivize ethical production, their effectiveness is limited and a social change may be needed to better balance food ethics and mass production.

Social Capital and Networks in Nature Conservation [SEAGA]November Tan
油
The document discusses social capital and networks in the conservation of Chek Jawa, a nature area in Singapore. It summarizes how in 2001, reclamation plans for Chek Jawa were deferred due to effective public consultation led by environmental civil society groups. These groups utilized social capital accumulated through networks, credibility, and trust to engage the public and state through non-confrontational strategies like guided walks, surveys, and online/media outreach. This landmark event was a watershed moment for environmental governance in Singapore and demonstrated the importance of social capital and networks for successful nature conservation.

Captain Planet, I am not. Here's the slide I did for the GE3239 Environmental Sustainability class on community efforts in the environmental and nature conservation scene in Singapore
The document summarizes the key topics and questions around conservation of built heritage in Singapore. It outlines the motivation and process for conservation efforts, led by government parties to achieve social, economic and cultural outcomes. It also discusses potential difficulties in conserving heritage and debates around what constitutes authentic heritage versus recreation, as well as gentrification and ensuring public access.
This document outlines the schedule and topics for a tutorial on the changing landscape of Singapore, including an introduction, pair discussions on different sections of readings, and exam tips. It directs students to identify keywords in questions and read assigned chapters on the city in a garden paradox, nationhood, and national pride, and challenges the definition of a monument, with the promise of prizes for valid answers to a question.
A slide I thrown together for my class to introduce them to chek jawa and the concept of a contested landscape. This is quite an outright form. I definitely would have to do a better job if I really want to tell the story of chek jawa
1) The document defines and provides examples of different types of landscapes, including real landscapes, imaginary landscapes, landscapes of spectacle, ordinary landscapes, dominant landscapes, alternative landscapes, landscapes of power, and contested landscapes.
2) Landscapes can reflect and legitimize the values and ideologies that structure a society, as well as reveal the power of those who constructed and maintained them.
3) Landscapes can be analyzed to provide clues about a society's prevailing ideas, values, and ideologies, as well as a country's global interactions and local responses.
This document discusses nature conservation efforts in Singapore. It begins by listing some natural areas in Singapore and noting that there are still some native species found there, such as coral reefs and dolphins. It then discusses what constitutes "nature" and different approaches to conservation. Several conservation groups in Singapore working on issues like terrestrial and marine conservation are highlighted. A case study of Chek Jawa wetlands discusses how public awareness and opposition helped defer a large reclamation project there in the early 2000s. The talk emphasizes the importance of public participation and involvement of different stakeholders in conservation.
This is a talk I gave for a class of industrial designers (ID2212) on "nature at work" as this is a class learning from biomimicry in their design. covered a bit about ecosystems and the organism's adaptation

Formal Methods: Whence and Whither? [Martin Fr辰nzle Festkolloquium, 2025]Jonathan Bowen
油
Alan Turing arguably wrote the first paper on formal methods 75 years ago. Since then, there have been claims and counterclaims about formal methods. Tool development has been slow but aided by Moores Law with the increasing power of computers. Although formal methods are not widespread in practical usage at a heavyweight level, their influence as crept into software engineering practice to the extent that they are no longer necessarily called formal methods in their use. In addition, in areas where safety and security are important, with the increasing use of computers in such applications, formal methods are a viable way to improve the reliability of such software-based systems. Their use in hardware where a mistake can be very costly is also important. This talk explores the journey of formal methods to the present day and speculates on future directions.

User Experience stands at a crossroads: will we live up to our potential to design a better world? or will we be co-opted by product management or another business buzzword?
Looking backwards, this talk will show how UX has repeatedly failed to create a better world, drawing on industry data from Nielsen Norman Group, Baymard, MeasuringU, WebAIM, and others.
Looking forwards, this talk will argue that UX must resist hype, say no more often and collaborate less often (you read that right), and become a true profession in order to be able to design a better world.

Regularly run repairs are essential to keep clusters healthy, yet having a good repair schedule is more challenging than it should be. Repairs often take a long time, preventing running them often. We want to address these challenges by making repairs incremental and allowing for automatic repair scheduling, without relying on external tools.
