I suppose leaving the womb is an act of hope. If hope is some inherent willingness to act despite the odds, then, indeed, the exit we all made _ from warm-water amniotic float to the oxygen-gasp of hard, dry land _ was hopeful. There was nothing about our long months of embryonic experience to suggest that leaving was a good idea, what with breakfasts in bed; still we took the plunge, most of us head-first, because it was in our nature.
