Channel idents are short logo sequences that play between programs to identify and brand a television channel. They are important because they instantly signal to viewers which channel they are watching. Effective idents connect with target audiences through distinctive visuals and sounds that reflect the tone of the channel. For example, the E4 ident uses surreal animated scenes and the Horror channel ident features dark corridors and suspenseful music. Good idents attract viewers to stay on the channel and watch more content. When creating idents for TV, designers must avoid things that could negatively impact young audiences like disturbing sounds or images.
This document discusses the purpose and opportunities of television idents. It explains that idents help identify the channel and organize the schedule by signaling what type of program is coming next. Idents can also segment the schedule by airing more explicit programs after watershed hours. Creating a memorable corporate identity through unique visuals and colors helps audiences recognize the channel. Idents are a way to create brand loyalty and market particular programs to the target audience. Channels use idents to package series and events, like using holiday themes, and as a promotional marketing tool.

Most people are used to receiving regular monthly pay cheques, hopefully with the occasional bonus and an annual rise. But while this is often taken for granted, for other workers the size and timing of their pay cheques are far more volatile with knock on effects on their ability to pay bills, save, plan ahead and smooth their living standards over time. But with Brits notoriously adverse to talking about pay, the scale of earnings volatility across the country is unknown.
How many workers are subject to volatile earnings, and how much does the timing and size vary from pay cheque to pay cheque? Who is most likely to experience earnings volatility, and in which industries is it most prevalent? What are the wider living standards consequences for families? And what can policy makers do to mitigate the impacts of unpredictable earnings?

1. In what ways does your media
Product use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real media
products?
By Niall Murphy
2. Use
One way I used codes and conventions of real
media products was my house style. The colours
I used are used commonly in TV News, with blue
being used by ITV and Red being used by the
BBC. I used the red on the i (below) as this
really draws the viewers eye to it and the i is
important as it is used to make the viewer feel
that the news is personal to them.
3. Use
To reinforce my house style, I used the colours
blue and red whenever text appeared on the
screen. Also, my anchor starts off the
programme, before then going to the title
sequence and back to him, which is similar to
both ITV and BBC News at 10. This, and the fact
he is dressed smart and has a background
(below), shows me using forms and conventions
of real TV News.
4. Develop
I used the convergent links such as twitter
(below) as it is becoming increasingly used by
news programmes. I believe this is used to get a
wider audience involved and provide live
updates for news on other media platforms. To
further increase my audience interaction, I used
a 'sent in photo', which is becoming more
popularly used in the weather reports (below).
5. Challenge
There are a few ways I challenged the general
conventions of TV News. Firstly, the weather in
programme was much more longer in
comparison to real News broadcasts, with it
lasting for around half of my programme. Also,
the actual fact that I had to produce a radio
advert in itself is a challenge of forms and
conventions, as you rarely hear a radio advert
for TV News and see more actual adverts on the
TV.
