Controlled burns are being conducted within the Yukon Training Area to remove accumulated wood chips and organic debris. Smoke from these burns may be visible from nearby areas throughout the summer. Removal of these chips and organic mat will help increase the establishment of annual grasses that sustain short term prescribed fire implementation and monitoring. Smoke may be visible from Eielson AFB, Two Rivers, North Pole, Salcha area and Alaska Hwy 2. The smoke generated from this process may last throughout the summer. In addition, AFS has other statewide responsibilities that include: interpretation of fire management policy; oversight of the BLM Alaska Aviation program; fuels management projects; and operating and maintaining advanced communication and computer systems such as the Alaska Lightning Detection System.
