Sustainability staff are involved in many initiatives at a time, and often these are run in collaboration with multiple stakeholders. The Sustainability Office version 1.0 consisted of one staffer--it was easy to determine priorities, manage work flow, and keep track of programs and contacts. The Sustainability Office version 2.0 consists of multiple staff (or students) and a bigger presence on campus. This means we are faced with more “hands in the toybox” and increasing demands from the campus community. How do we juggle multiple concurrent projects, share institutional memory, nurture relationships with campus contacts, repeat best practices, and avoid past mistakes? Overall, how do we create a sense of personal sustainability within the professional operation of our sustainability programs? Sustainability officers from four universities will share strategies they use to seek balance in the workplace. Many tools exist to help (or hinder) our workflow and projects--we just need to identify our specific needs and determine which tool is best for our work environment. Panelists will share tools they use to increase efficiency when managing staff and students, organizing and tracking progress of multiple projects, documenting and sharing campus metrics, and effectively harness the power of collaboration with campus partners. Rather than simply describing the tools we use, and the purpose(s) they serve on our campuses, we will share our thought processes and strategies in tool selection.

Kathy-Ann Fletcher Abertay University An interactive workshop that will introduce attendees to the Abertay University roadmap for creating a curriculum that embeds equality, diversity and inclusion. This process requires a culture change in many organisations (e.g. HE) to ensure that the curriculum in teaching, practice and support is inherently anti-racist. Participants will discuss, using case studies especially Abertay’s project, factors that facilitate and block culture change. The aim of the workshop is to help participants develop their culture change plans for their institutions by learning from Abertay and each other. By examining the roadmap presented by Abertay, we will learn about the pace of change and tangible steps that are needed in motivating that cultural change. The workshop will explore how policy, procedures, training (cultural sensitivity, curriculum development etc), dialogue between divisions and among academic and support services are vital in motivating long-lasting cultural change beyond the tick box that turns people away from such initiatives. The workshop will also examine the best practice in engaging with stakeholders and therefore building buy-in from staff and student complements, current and alumni as well. The roadmap is focused on creating an accessible place of belonging for all staff and students. Therefore, the interactive workshop will explore some of what Abertay has done in the past few years to create that place of belonging for all regardless of background and discuss how those areas of good practice are being leveraged to influence wider practice in the institution. We will explore the power co-creation in supporting that culture that approaches anti-racism from an intersectional lens to ensure that all feel welcomed and supported equally within the university. This workshop was delivered at the Reimagining Higher Education: journeys of decolonising conference, held at De Montfort University, Leicester, on Wednesday 8th November 2023.

Projects may be carried out by both individuals and within groups. The outputs might include a report, presentation, poster, artefact or prototype (physical or digital). Project based learning is “a teaching method in which students gain knowledge and skills by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to an engaging and complex question, problem, or challenge.” (BIE 2015). When undertaking a project, seven distinct stages have been identified that the project owner(s) go through. These are: the question, plan, research, produce, improve, present and evaluate. At each stage students may engage in a variety of activities. This multifaceted form of learning presents opportunities to participate in authentic and meaningful problems and to develop a range of skills along the journey. Reflecting upon these experiences, can encourage students to reconstruct what they have learned, and go on to confidently articulate the skills they have developed (or have yet to develop), and how they can apply these in other situations. Learning how to self-reflect on these experiences and developing a habit of doing so, can have a profound impact on learning. However for some this does not come easily and is often undervalued. In my talk I will share the Project Based Learning (PjBL) Toolkit and how resources within this can be used to scaffold effective and meaningful multimedia reflective practice, develop confident communication skills and digital capabilities.
