Lions are carnivorous mammals that belong to the genus Panthera. Males have manes and lions are known for their loud roars. They live in social groups called prides that can have between 3 to 30 lions. While once widespread in Africa and Asia, lions now live primarily in zoos, parks and reserves as their natural habitat has declined. White lions are not a separate species but result from a genetic condition called leucism that causes lighter coat coloring. They occasionally occur naturally but are more commonly found in captivity where breeders selectively breed for the white trait.
