Community Eco-Drone Workshop
Dr Andrea Berardi
The Open University / Cobra Collective
 30 minutes introduction to drone deployment;
 1 hour hands-on flying;
 30 minutes open discussion and future plans.
Workshop Plan
...also known as:
 Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV);
 Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS)
Two main types:
 Fixed wing;
 Rotary wing.
What is a drone?
The Deficit Model proposes that communities lack appropriate
knowledge for managing their problems, and need to be
informed and guided by professional experts.
Models of Intervention:
Deficit
Communities have the expertise and local knowledge to
resolve their own problems and implemented their own
solutions.
Models of Intervention:
Lay Expertise
1. Explore feasibility;
2. Engage stakeholders and establish aims;
3. Acquire drone and accessories;
4. Train in drone operation, safety/privacy regulations;
5. Execute missions;
6. Debrief, analyse and communicate results.
Steps in Drone Deployment
Feasibility: National No-Fly Zones
Feasibility: National No-Fly Zones
Although operators of drones weighing 7 kg or
less are not required to have the permission of
ATC, the Air Navigation Order requires that any
person in charge of a small drone:
 may only fly the aircraft if reasonably satisfied
that the flight can safely be made and;
 that they must maintain direct, unaided visual
contact with the aircraft for the purpose of
avoiding collisions.
Aerodrome No-fly Zones

Training 1: regulations
 Avoid national no-fly zones.
 Fly below 125m in height.
 Fly at least 150m away from congested areas.
 Fly at least 50m away from roads, building and people.
 Fly within line-of-sight (<500 m)
Ascot & Sunnings 50m buffer zone
Training 3: pre-flight preparations
 If possible, let land-owners know that youll be flying a missions.
 Charge everything: batteries; controller; tablet.
 Load base-maps and waypoints in tablet (some app require you to
be online!). Make sure that survey area does not exceed battery
charge.
 Make sure microSD card has plenty of free memory.
 6 eyes are better than two!!!
Flight practicalities
 Cant fly in the rain!
 >20 mile/hour winds makes flying difficult and potentially
dangerous.
 Scattered clouds/long shadows can make the quality of imagery
poor.
 Cold days can significantly reduce flight time (<50%).
 Clear home point (no obstructions such as trees) at least 30 m
radius needed.
