Introduction
Construction management (CM) is a professional service that uses specialized, project
management techniques to oversee the planning, design, and construction of a project, from its beginning
to its end.

Classification of construction Work
 According to their cost
 Minor Work  Below Rs 25000 /-
 Major Work  Between Rs 25000 /- and Rs 1 Lakhs
 Project  Above 1 Lakhs

 According to their Work
 Light Construction  Light structural Member, Light foundation & Light timber member.
Eg: Residential Building, Schools, Village & city Roads, Small Water Supply and
Sewage Work
 Heavy Construction  Heavy Structural member on massive foundations.
Eg: Tunnels, bridges, oil pipes lines, railways, airport, dams, and thermal plant.
 Industrial Construction  Industries producing commercial products.
Eg: Refineries, Fertilizers, Chemical and Steel Plant.
Methods of Planning and scheduling
The methods of Planning &scheduling the construction of a project are as follows:
1. By charts such as bar chart or Gantt chart and milestone charts.
2. By network technique such as programme Evaluation review technique (P.E.R.T) & Critical Path
Methods (C.P.M)
Bar Chart or Gantt chart
A Gantt chart is a type of bar chart that illustrates a project schedule, named after its
inventor, Henry Gantt (18611919), who designed such a chart around the years 19101915.
Milestones Chart
 Milestones are tools used in project management to mark specific points along a
project timeline.
 These points may signal anchors such as a project start and end date, or a need for external
review or input and budget checks.
Network Diagram
 The network diagram is a flow of diagram in which activities and events are connected
logically and sequentially.
Activity
 In project management, a task is an activity that needs to be accomplished within a defined period
of time or by a deadline to work towards work-related goals.
 A task can be broken down into assignments which should also have a defined start and end date
or a deadline for completion.
