During Elizabethan times in England, theater was popular and supported by royalty. Queen Elizabeth I was a patron of the arts and protected William Shakespeare and his plays. Shakespeare's plays were performed by acting companies that were sponsored by wealthy patrons. One of the most famous theaters was the Globe Theater in London, where Shakespeare was a part owner. It hosted performances of Shakespeare's plays and other works, but was eventually closed by Puritans who disapproved of theater.
