___ 1. This is a technique in

___ 2. These are facts
and other information
that provide further
understanding about the
main subject of a reading
material.
___ 3. This refers
to the central idea
of a reading
selection.
___ 4. This means
rewriting other authors
statements in your own
words and keeping the
same length of the
original text.
5. This is a strategy
in writing where you
repeat the exact
statement of the speaker
and write them inside the
quotation mark.
II. Directions: Read each
statement carefully.
Write FACT if the
statement is true, BLUFF
if not.
6. The supporting
detail of a text is
the most important
idea in a paragraph.
7. In a paragraph,
explanations and
descriptions of the
general statement are
presented in the topic
sentence.
8. Textual evidence
is used by authors
to prove that the
main idea is true and
factual
9. The main idea of a
text can only be
found in the
beginning of a
paragraph.
10. When we say textual
evidence, these are the
supporting details of the
main idea in a reading
selection.
Let us now dig deeper on our lesson which
is citing evidence to support a general
statement. However, you might be having
these questions in your mind:
What is a general statement?
What do you mean by evidence?
How would I identify general statement
and evidence in a text?
If you were asked about
the general statement of
a paragraph or text, it
means you need to find
the main idea of the
reading material.
Main Idea
is the most important part of the
paragraph because it is the
central point of discussion
 it also refers to the
general statement of the
reading text.
General Statement
tells what the
entire passage is all
about (Balmaceda
et al. 2000)
Topic
is the subject of the
reading material that is
being described or
developed in the entire
text.
Topic
The topic of the
whole text can be
found in the main
idea.
Check the paragraph
below and let us find the
topic and the general
statement or what we
also called as main idea.
The earths moon can change its
color to bloody red. According to
Howell (2019), the usual whitish
moon may turn to red or ruddy-
brown color when the moon is in a
total lunar eclipse. This phenomenon
is called blood moon.
Strategies in Identifying the Main Idea
Identify the topic.
Find the topic sentence.
Topic sentence
 is the entire sentence
in the paragraph
where the topic is
located.
Topic sentence
tells you the main
idea of the text
(Cuesta College
n.d.)
Therefore, if you
identified the topic
sentence, it means you
have successfully found
the main idea!
Francisco Balagtas Marcelo H. Del Pilar Gregorio Del Pilar
Bulacan is officially called as the Land of
the Heroes. In an article written by
Allison (2020), Bulacan was given such
title because many famous heroes in
Philippine history were born in this
province. Some of these heroes were
Francisco Balagtas, Marcelo H. Del Pilar,
and Gregorio del Pilar.
The topic in the given
text is Bulacan
Bulacan is officially called
as the Land of the Heroes.
The topic sentence is
Example 1:
Even though how often we clean, we
always see and get a lot of dust in
different parts of our homes. Dust is
everywhere. These particles stay on
any still objects like bookshelves,
furniture, windows, floors, and others
(Pado et al. 2018).
Example 2:
Dust has been found to be a mix of
different things like animal fur, food,
clothing fiber, soil, dead insects,
beddings, and other chemicals.
These are some common elements
of dust particles (Pado et al. 2018).
