The document discusses the subjunctive mood in English grammar. It defines the subjunctive mood and covers its uses including:
- Synthetic verb forms of the present, past and perfect subjunctive
- Analytical forms using "should", "would", "may" and "might" plus infinitives
- Uses in simple sentences, conditional clauses, subject/predicate clauses and more
- Differences between British and American usage of the subjunctive forms
Conditional sentences are composed of an if-clause and a main clause. There are four types of conditional sentences classified according to their implications. Type 0 uses present tense in both clauses to talk about universal truths. Type 1 uses present tense in the if-clause and future tense in the main clause to talk about probable future situations. Type 2 uses past tense in the if-clause and "would" in the main clause to talk about unlikely present or future situations. Type 3 uses past perfect tense in the if-clause and "would have" in the main clause to talk about impossible past situations.
Part of speech refers to the functional role that a word plays in a sentence. There are 8 main parts of speech: nouns, pronouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, and interjections. Nouns name people, places, things, and ideas. Pronouns replace nouns. Adjectives describe nouns. Verbs indicate actions or states of being. Adverbs modify verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs. Prepositions show relationships of time, place, and direction. Conjunctions connect words and sentences. Interjections express emotions.
This document discusses identifying and using opinion-marking signals to share ideas. It defines facts as verifiable statements and opinions as personal judgments that others may disagree with. It provides examples of opinion-marking signals to introduce personal, general, agreeing, and disagreeing opinions. Students are expected to identify these signals and use them to express their opinions on assigned topics in one paragraph.
Modal verbs are used to express ideas like ability, permission, possibility, obligation, and recommendation. The main modal verbs are can, could, may, might, must, shall, should, will, would, and ought to. They are sometimes called auxiliary verbs because they provide additional meaning to the main verb. Modal verbs do not conjugate or use other auxiliary verbs like do/does. They are followed by the base form of the main verb. Their meaning can depend on context as some like may, could, would have double concepts.
