E-theses and academia
There are nearly three hundred universities and one hundred R&D
institutions in India are granting PhD and masters degrees. It is reported
that nearly 10,000 PhD theses are accepted by Universities.
IITK maintains a bibliographic database (with abstract) named as Theses
(old database) in addition to DSpace full text repository.
IIT Delhi, Central Library has bibliographical list of PhD theses since 1966
to current, which includes nearly 2000 records accessible through web.
The bibliographical database of IITB has nearly four thousand records
Vidyanidhi��s multilingual database having 15,000 records in Hindi and 600
records in Kannada, more than 50,000 metadata of PhD, M.Phil, MA, M.Sc,
M Tech, ME, MD, M Com., MBA, MCA, MLIS, M.Ed., theses and
dissertations.
INFLIBNET��s national union catalogue of doctoral theses includes 1,50000
bibliographical records of PhD theses accepted by nearly two hundred
universities

Scope and objectives
Although there is sizeable number of ETD digital libraries in India and
maintaining a steady growth but there is no single study undertaken which looks
into how digital libraries of ETDs is functioning, what are the constraints in the
process, and how it can be improved. It��s an attempt to do a comparative study of
prominent digital libraries of ETDs with high level description of key aspects and
proposed a model for national repository.
The following two major points are discussed:
? A seamless ETD system for all universities/research institutions, which are
already member of national networks or consortia viz. INDEST, INFLIBNET as
well as libraries attached with colleges or small organizations with underdeveloped
ICT infrastructure, can join either as a data provider or simply access the e-theses
by paying membership fees.
? A model for national e-theses repository

Methodology and selection of sample
The research method used in this study is the triangulation of three
different methods (1) e-mail questionnaire (2) face to face interview
(3)content analysis of ETD websites
Some of the points used as a basis for the selection of digital
libraries for the evaluation are:
? The importance, relevance, credibility of the organization
hosting the digital library
? Type of collection and users
? The access facilities, submission policies and user interface
The Registry of Open Access Repositories (ROAR)/ Directory of Open
Access Repositories (OpenDOAR) were consulted but they do not
represent a complete picture of Indian ETD repositories as the
registration is not mandatory.

The IR also hosts backlists or online sites for: Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council, Honors in Practice, Insecta Mundi, Great Plains Quarterly, Great Plains Research, Textile Society of America Symposium Proceedings, Nebraska Law Review, Nebraska Bird Review, Nebraska Anthropologist, Cornhusker Economics, and Business in Nebraska. The Zea Books, the repositories imprint, has published monographs in areas of reference, bibliography, ornithology, modern European history, zoology, botany, art history, music history, Native American studies, and early childhood and language education. More than fifty Zea Books titles have appeared since 2006. This presentation will cover the workflows that have been established for managing the identities (authority control) of journal authors, adding ORCIDs for authors and working on the quality of metadata in the institutional repository. It will explore the limitations of attempting to manage the identities of authors in an IR (i.e., the metadata template is limited, e.g., no cross references, no dates or qualifiers for names) . It will look at how users access the materials in the repository and why some may question if working on metadata quality is really necessary or sustainable in an IR. Finally, it will discuss the plan to create Nebraska Scholarly Commons, a repository for all four University of Nebraska campuses, and the possible impact on metadata.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations in Peru: A Twelve-Year Experience and Its...Libio Huaroto

In June 2004, University of San Marcos (UNMSM, Lima, Peru) launched the first portal providing access to electronic theses and dissertations in Peru using the Cybertesis platform. This initiative marked the beginning of open access theses repositories in the country. It was followed by other higher education and research institutions, both public and private. Four years later, the Peruvian Network for Digital Theses was established. It was officially closed in December 2014. In June 2010, Red CLARA launched LA REFERENCIA, a project funded by Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo (BID). Eight regional countries were part of this initiative: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru and Venezuela. El Salvador joined it recently. The aim of the project was to design a strategy for and an agreed framework on interoperability and scientific production management for Latin America. As of today, country members have developed national networks, each with its respective national repository portal. Repositories contain three (3) basic types of collections: master��s theses and doctoral dissertations; journal articles; and research projects. Participant institutions in LA REFERFENCIA are SNRD (Argentina), IBICT (Brazil), RRAAE (Ecuador), COLCIENCIAS, MEN, RENATA (Colombia), CONICYT, (Chile), CBUES (El Salvador), CONACYT, CUDI (M��xico), RENARE (Peru), and CENIT, REACCIUN (Venezuela). Two events furthering open access to scientific research have been of key importance in Peru in the last two years; the first being the enacting of statute 30035 and its Regulations, by which the National Repository for Open Access Science and Technology was created. According to this legislation, all projects funded with public money will be openly accessible. The second event was the implementation of ALICIA (http://alicia.concytec.gob.pe), the aforementioned National Repository for Open Access Science and Technology. ALICIA is made up of 33 repositories �C 13 of them are theses and dissertation repositories; 20 are institutional ones. ALICIA contains 34,567 registration records: 9,297 of them correspond to master��s theses, and 1,906 to doctoral dissertations (ALICIA has an additional 25,270 professional theses submitted by students after completing their undergraduate studies in order to obtain a professional license granted by the Peruvian state). LA REFERENCIA offers access to 88,599 doctoral dissertations and 202,798 master��s theses. Peruvian repositories for electronic theses and dissertations use DSpace, and have adopted the DRIVE 2.0 norms. Some institutions, like Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas (UPC) have implemented Altmetrics indicators, showing social network activities connected to contents in theses, dissertations and journal articles.

The highest number of papers, i.e. 15.41% were published in the year 2007. A total of 70 counties were involved in contributing publications and United States contributed highest to the tune of 38.60% and India was at eighth position with 2.25% publications. Most productive institution was University of California, which contributed a total of 2.83% publications. Proceeding papers amounted to 70.28% of the literature on digital library. Lecture Notes in Computer Science with 20.89% and English language with 98.50% publications were at the top. Highest foreign collaborations in 24.66% publications reported in papers from UK. The study may help policy makers to look into the trends and make effective policies related to digital libraries on the basis of inferences drawn from the analysis.

3. E-theses and academia There are nearly three hundred universities and one hundred R&D institutions in India are granting PhD and masters degrees. It is reported that nearly 10,000 PhD theses are accepted by Universities. IITK maintains a bibliographic database (with abstract) named as Theses (old database) in addition to DSpace full text repository. IIT Delhi, Central Library has bibliographical list of PhD theses since 1966 to current, which includes nearly 2000 records accessible through web. The bibliographical database of IITB has nearly four thousand records Vidyanidhi��s multilingual database having 15,000 records in Hindi and 600 records in Kannada, more than 50,000 metadata of PhD, M.Phil, MA, M.Sc, M Tech, ME, MD, M Com., MBA, MCA, MLIS, M.Ed., theses and dissertations. INFLIBNET��s national union catalogue of doctoral theses includes 1,50000 bibliographical records of PhD theses accepted by nearly two hundred universities

5. Scope and objectives Although there is sizeable number of ETD digital libraries in India and maintaining a steady growth but there is no single study undertaken which looks into how digital libraries of ETDs is functioning, what are the constraints in the process, and how it can be improved. It��s an attempt to do a comparative study of prominent digital libraries of ETDs with high level description of key aspects and proposed a model for national repository. The following two major points are discussed: ? A seamless ETD system for all universities/research institutions, which are already member of national networks or consortia viz. INDEST, INFLIBNET as well as libraries attached with colleges or small organizations with underdeveloped ICT infrastructure, can join either as a data provider or simply access the e-theses by paying membership fees. ? Methodology and selection of sample The research method used in this study is the triangulation of three different methods (1) e-mail questionnaire (2) face to face interview (3)content analysis of ETD websites Some of the points used as a basis for the selection of digital libraries for the evaluation are: ? The importance, relevance, credibility of the organization hosting the digital library ? Type of collection and users ? The access facilities, submission policies and user interface The Registry of Open Access Repositories (ROAR)/ Directory of Open Access Repositories (OpenDOAR) were consulted but they do not represent a complete picture of Indian ETD repositories as the registration is not mandatory. 10th International Symposium on Electronic Theses and Dissertations, Uppsala, Sweden.
