This document discusses biodiversity in Portugal. It begins by defining biodiversity and the different types, including genetic, species, and ecological diversity. It then discusses consequences of biodiversity loss, like reduced oxygen and increased carbon dioxide. The document outlines ways to conserve biodiversity, like planting trees and reducing waste. It provides details on protected species and habitats in Portugal, noting threats from habitat loss, pollution, and invasive species. Finally, it summarizes Portugal's National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan, which includes 10 strategies focused on research, expanding protected areas networks, conservation of species and habitats, and international cooperation.
Portugal's forests are home to a diverse array of tree species that vary based on location. In the north, deciduous trees like oak and chestnut are common, while evergreen oaks dominate the south. Common species include Portuguese oak, cork oak, black oak, and holm oak. However, deforestation threatens biodiversity as trees are cut down for urban development, agriculture, and raw materials. Loss of forest cover endangers some species and could cause others to disappear from Portugal entirely.
Portugal has a diverse climate with summer temperatures reaching 40属C and winter temperatures dropping to -5属C. In late 2019 and early 2020, storms Elsa and Fabien caused immense damage, including two deaths and hundreds displaced due to flooding of the Mondego River. Some rivers overflowed their banks and turned brown from clay runoff from surrounding hills. Portugal had over 40,000 acres burned in 2019 wildfires, more than the previous year, with a devastating forest fire in 2017 in Pedr坦g達o Grande.
Biodiversity refers to the variety of life on Earth and can be measured at different levels. It includes genetic diversity within species, species diversity between organisms, and ecosystem diversity of habitats and communities. Genetic diversity is the variation in inherited traits within a species and allows populations to adapt. Species diversity is simply the number and types of species. Ecosystem diversity examines the habitats, communities, and processes within biological communities and their environments.
Lake Como is located in northern Italy in the Lombardy region near Milan. It is the deepest lake in Italy and has the largest perimeter. The climate around Lake Como is mild and humid since the Alps block winds and the lake moderates temperatures, making winters not too cold and summers not too hot. Various plant species grow around Lake Como, including cypresses, laurels, camellias, azaleas, rhododendrons, magnolias and palms. Several fish species live in the lake, such as basses, pikes, perches, carps, chubs, trouts, tenches and catfish.
The document discusses control methods for invasive species like the brown marmorated stink bug. It damages agriculture and has no natural predators in the areas where it has been imported. It moves in large groups, amplifying the damages. Control methods mentioned include directly killing the bugs and eggs, using Marsiglia soup or natural attractions to sacrificial plants, finding and destroying winter nests, employing natural insecticides or nets, and introducing natural predators.
Biodiversity refers to the variety of life on Earth, including genetic, species, and ecosystem diversity. It can be measured by wealth, the number of species in an ecosystem, and relative abundance, the number of individuals of each species. Threats to biodiversity include human destruction through deforestation and hunting as well as climate change. These threats can be reduced through indirect means like decreasing pollution or direct actions such as protecting natural areas.
This document discusses the flora and fauna of Cyprus. It notes that Cyprus has over 1950 species of flora, of which 153 are endemic. The fauna includes 32 mammal species, 126 reptile and amphibian species, 364 bird species, and thousands of insect species. Cyprus' geographic position at the intersection of three continents and long isolation have led to great biodiversity and many endemic species. Notable endemic fauna mentioned include dwarf elephants and hippos that once inhabited the island.
The virtual meeting will take place from June 1st to June 4th 2021 for the Erasmus+ project "BRICKS", and will focus on sustainability in mountains and cities. The agenda includes an opening on June 1st, virtual tours of participating countries and study areas, a presentation on climate change and biodiversity loss, group work and study sessions, presentations from student teams on June 4th, and a closing on June 4th. Links are also provided to videos related to sustainability in Italy.
The loss of biodiversity is a silent killer that is difficult to detect until it is too late, unlike climate change whose impacts are felt in everyday life. By the time the consequences of biodiversity loss are felt, it may be too late to remedy the situation.
Biodiversity refers to the variety of life on Earth, including genetic, species, and ecosystem diversity. It can be measured by wealth, which is the number of species in an ecosystem, and relative abundance, which is the number of individuals of each species. Biodiversity is threatened by human activities like deforestation and hunting, as well as climate change, which can cause species to go extinct if unable to adapt. These threats can be reduced through both indirect means like limiting pollution and direct actions such as protecting natural areas to secure biodiversity.
People wear masks and gloves when leaving home or at work to prevent the spread of coronavirus, but many improperly discard them, causing pollution as masks and gloves end up on beaches. Students and teachers also wear masks and use hand sanitizer at schools under new lockdown procedures during the pandemic, which has brought widespread changes like increased indoor mask usage and more people working from home.
People wear masks and gloves when working or leaving home to prevent the spread of disease, but many improperly dispose of used masks and gloves, polluting beaches and the environment. Schools also require students and teachers to wear masks and use hand sanitizers to stay clean and stop transmission.
This document provides instructions for creating and publishing a Padlet. It outlines the steps to set up a Padlet account, design a padlet by selecting a layout and adding a title/description, and then publish the padlet by copying the embed code and pasting it into a Twinspace website. The purpose is to provide guidance to participants on how to create their own padlets and share them in a sample Twinspace forum for an assignment.
This document provides instructions for uploading a video to YouTube and publishing it in a Twinspace. It explains how to login to YouTube, select a video to upload, give it a title and visibility settings, and get an embed code to paste into a Twinspace post. Users are then asked to create and upload their own video to a sample Twinspace using these steps.
Students were asked to complete tasks and answer questions to prepare for an online Erasmus+ project meeting about their experiences during the coronavirus pandemic. They were to use pictures and hashtags to show how they spent Easter and communicated with friends during lockdown, and describe their experiences with homeschooling. Students also expressed how they were feeling over the past month, and completed sentences about what they would not have done, what they are grateful for, what they will remember, and their biggest concern from this period.
The document provides instructions for students to prepare for an online meeting about their experiences during the coronavirus pandemic. Students are asked to submit responses to questions using pictures, hashtags, emoticons and completed sentences. The questions focus on how students communicated with friends, their home schooling experience, what they missed and are looking forward to, and their feelings over the past month.
