WHAT IS MODELLING

A mathematical model is an abstract model that uses
mathematical language to describe the behaviour of a system
 Mathematical models are used particularly in the
natural sciences and engineering disciplines but
also in the social sciences (such as economics,
sociology and political science); physicists,
engineers, computer scientists, and economists
use mathematical models most extensively.
 Eykhoff (1974) defined a mathematical model as
'a representation of the essential aspects of an
existing system (or a system to be constructed)
which presents knowledge of that system in
usable form'.

Heffron-phillips Model
 Heffron-phillips Model of a synchronous machine is commonly
used for the small signal stability analysis.
 Heffron-Phillips model has been used extensively and many
analytical conclusions and design methods have been developed on
the basis of Phillips-Heffron model.
 The Heffron-Phillips model of a synchronous machine has
successfully been used for investigating the low frequency
oscillations and designing power system stabilisers.
 The parameters of the model are usually calculated using the
synchronous generator parameters and some system variables at
steady-state conditions.
 Heffron-Phillips model of a synchronous machine is commonly used
in small signal stability analysis and for off-line design of power
system stabilisers.
