Sublimation method depends on the use of a volatile dye in the printed design. When the paper is heated the dye is preferentially adsorbed from the vapour phase by the textile material with which the heated paper is held in contact. Sublimation process is where a the special sublimation ink has been heated up until in converting it into a gas, at this point where it diffuses onto the selected product and solidifies. The ink transfer using sublimation method will be permanently heat transferred to textile, mugs, puzzles, hats, metals, and other sublimation surfaces. Other than that, sublimation printing is also suitable on fabrics such as t-shirt, cushions, home decoration etc. and also to ceramic products for instance mugs.鏤
What types of materials suitable in sublimation process and are there any limitations?
As mention above, in sublimation printing you can print any sublimation blanks such as fabrics, polyester, jigsaw puzzle, hats and anything that have sublimate coating on it can be used in sublimation printing.鏤 Anyhow, there are still limitations in sublimation printings. This includes a natural fiber such as cotton. Sublimation printing is not suitable to be printed on 100% cotton because the image to fade and wash out.
Normally, sublimation inks are darker than normal inks. Due to that reason, you cannot print it onto dark colored material, but you can change it into pastel color or white to get the awesome image printed.
Please remember, the only product that has sublimation coated can be used in sublimation printing. It would never work if you use sublimation printings on normal mugs you purchase in the mall no matter how expensive it is. For your information, the most suitable heat suitable for sublimation process are from 180 to 400 degree Celsius.鏤

- 2. In today's market when people talk about dye sublimation transfers, they are usually speaking about output from inkjet printers. The problem with inkjet printers and dye sublimation is that most of the printers spray their ink out of tiny nozzles that are easily clogged by the relatively large dye sublimation particles.
- 3. Dye sublimation will not work on 100% cotton. There has to be polyester because that is what holds the sublimed dye. The more polyester the better; 50/50 is better than 65/35.
- 4. If you are subbing to the cotton/poly mix, transferring brighter colors are better. Also, if you are going to use colored shirts, try a small sample (dye sub in and paper is expensive) first as the color will end up nothing like you expected. (If you need to print on 100% cotton like shirts,you will need the special transfer paper for it :Dark and Light T-Shirts Transfer Paper)

When a piece of fabric is printed using a sublimation printer the ink is injected into the fibres themselves, ensuring an even hue and much reducing the risk of colours running in contact with water (in the wash) or distorting. This ensures a more uniform quality of garment or finished product, allowing companies to know in advance how their promotional items, clothing or other printed fibrous materials will look.
