- 1. 1 16 SEPTEMBER 2011 | ISSUE 3 From Mr Michael Deveney - Principal Th担ng i畛p t畛 th畉y Michael Deveney - Hi畛u tr動畛ng tr動畛ng BVIS You can find the BVIS mission statement on the About us page on the schools website. The last part of our mission reads, .at BVIS we act with integrity and treat one another with respect, learning together as responsible global and Vietnamese citizens. The website then lists the many ways in which we seek to achieve our mission, including the celebration of Vietnamese customs and traditions. And so, last Monday, we were able to join in the festivities and create a truly vibrant and thoroughly enjoyable day. Children were entertained in the morning by excitable and acrobatic dragons, accompanied by thunderous drumming, before re-assembling in the afternoon for a marvellous show. All were resplendent in their ao dai as they paraded lanterns, sang songs, danced and performed role-plays for us. The amount of preparation was immediately evident, and for that we have to thank teachers as well as moms and dads. As an introduction to Vietnamese traditions and culture the whole occasion was very fitting indeed; moreover, it was another wonderful first for us here at BVIS. - 2. 2 Settling into school at BVIS Primary Our focal points in the Primary school for the first few weeks of term have been the establishment of routines and baseline assessments of the children in key areas of the curriculum. Our experience tells us that if the children feel secure and familiar with their routines, then they are happy to learn. Lien Ket Following this settling in period, we started our full Primary curriculum this week. Classes took part in fun, practical Entry Points to their Lien Ket topics. The idea of an Entry Point is to stimulate the childrens interest in the topic they will be studying this term. A mystery guest from the past visited Y5 have the children found out who it was yet? Y4 were set a series of adventurous challenges for their new Lien Ket topic of Explorers and Adventurers whilst Y2 investigated different forms of transport in the school drive. An amazing forest is growing in Y3 for the childrens Forests topic. The children in Y1 will begin their first formal Lien Ket topic later on in the term after a period of transition towards the Primary curriculum. Meanwhile, our Y6 pioneers participated in the first ever BVIS trip as they started their topic of Saigon! Food in school We provide snacks and lunch for the children at BVIS, so we would very much appreciate it if you did not send any other food or drinks to school. However, if your child wishes to celebrate their birthday at school, it is acceptable to send in a cake (no more than that please!) It is important to contact the class teachers beforehand to arrange a time for you to bring in the birthday cake for the children to enjoy. Also, please inform the teachers of the cakes ingredients in case any of the children suffer from food allergies. Thank you for your cooperation. - 3. 3 We had a very fun field trip on Tuesday. We went to some exotic places in Saigon, like the Vinh Nghiem Pagoda, Notre Dame, the head post office of Ho Chi Minh City and the Crescent area. This field trip helped us a lot for our Lien Ket Topic. We had a very great experience. The Notre Dame was beautiful. We liked the architecture very much. The red brick of the Notre Dame has survived for many years. The Vinh Nghiem pagoda was built by Vietnamese people and it is more traditional. The Vinh Nghiem pagoda is famous because of its unique structure in Vietnam. The head post office was also built by the French so the architecture is the same as the Notre Dame. There are two very large maps in the head office. It shows the maps of Vietnam a long time ago. Last but not least, we went to the Crescent area. It is a new urban area so it look very clean and modern. Everyone was very exhausted when we got back. We will never forget this trip. By Peter and Duy in 6B Saigon-OurHome

- 5. 5 Assemblies - This weeks assembly was action packed. Students from each class took to the stage to perform their role-plays based on the words Caring, Respect and Integrity from the BVIS mission statement. They were very informative and interesting to watch. Well done to everyone who got involved. I am sure students will remember these words in their behaviour around school and at home. From Ms Jacqueline Britton - KS3 Coordinator Th担ng i畛p t畛 Jacqueline Britton - Kh畛i Tr動畛ng Kh畛i Trung H畛c Student Council A student council is a group elected by the students to put forward ideas and opinions from the student body at BVIS. Every student will have the opportunity to run for election in order to be part of the student council. The elections will take place next Wednesday and students are asked to prepare a speech that will persuade the rest of their class to vote for them. By being part of the student council, they will have the chance to have a say on what happens at BVIS as well as plan events for students throughout the year. Parent Information Evening The parents meeting on Wednesday was very well attended, I do hope that everyone found the evening informative. - 6. 6 Extra Curricular Activities (ECAs) A letter went home on Tuesday for students to make their ECA choices. All clubs start from Monday 19 September except for Kung Fu and I-Robot which start a week later (members of Kung Fu and I-Robot clubs will receive an individual letter explaining about payments). Bus users will be provided with a second bus departing at 3.45 pm.
