Words: meLissA emerson
shearling
Coats are always the biggest draw of the A/W14 shows, and this season
didn’t disappoint. Shearling couldn’t resist making a comeback and
showed its versatility in a mix of classic and more creative styles. Burberry,
of course, led the way with heritage pieces in rich tans and beiges, while
a cape casually slung over one shoulder was the ultimate in laid-back luxe.
Moving away from the traditional was 3.1 Phillip Lim, who combined
rich block colours, from cerise to chocolate brown, to form plush
patchwork pieces, while stand-out stand-alones included a lilac wash
jacket. At Altuzarra things stayed neutral, and its off-white, oversized
jackets with leather detail were a less warm and fuzzy side of the trend.

siXties
If there was ever an era that fashion couldn’t resist revisiting, it’s the Swinging Sixties.
The decade gave us some of our greatest icons, from Twiggy and Jean Shrimpton, to Jane
Birkin, whose namesake Hermès’ Birkin bag remains fashion legend. Unsurprisingly,
all with their penchant for dramatic luxury, it was Valentino, Louis Vuitton and Gucci
who drew on this theme the most. Gucci’s knee-high boots in python and black patent
toughened up soft ice-cream shades, while supremely soft leather and embellishment
added a touch of 21st-century glamour. A-line mini dresses featured heavily across the
shows; Dsquared² championed the silhouette, but it was Valentino who reigned supreme
with the addition of geometric prints and polka dots.

It’s no longer enough to stand out in the crowd; you have to do it while
simultaneously blending in. Contradictory? Confusing? Welcome to the
world of fashion. This the logic of the Normcore trend, which is rapidly
moving beyond buzzword status; the A/W14 shows were big on this pared-
back approach, which advocates a neutral palette, often head-to-toe in one
colour and minimal fuss, allowing the shapes and cut of the clothing to
take centre stage – think androgynous suiting, polo-necks and a wilful lack
of embellishment. Simple, chic polo-necks featured at Guy Laroche and
in the relaxed dresses at No.21, while Jil Sander, always one for masterful
minimalism, was in fashion heaven with simple two-piece suits.

Is it just us or does Spring/Summer seem to have come a little early this year? Refusing
to stick to winter’s usual dark colour palette, this season, designers left a dazzling trail of
colour all the way from New York to Paris. Chanel’s supermarket shoppers took to the
aisles in brightly coloured coats of yellow, green and orange, all sporting a visible lining
of geometric shapes, while Roksanda Ilincic and Peter Pilotto followed suit with bold
technicolour shapes, mother-of-pearl embellishment and heavy, ribbed knits – be warned,
this trend is not for the faint of heart.
