This document summarizes two Italian civic participation projects called Openpolis and Openparlamento. Openpolis (2006) created an online database of all Italian politicians with biographical and political information. It had over 150,000 politician profiles from 8,000 municipalities with 10,000 users and 3,000 daily visitors. Openparlamento (2009) similarly organized parliamentary activities and bills to increase transparency, receiving both positive media coverage and angry politician reactions. It aimed to expand data collection and civic engagement tools to further monitor the political process.
