PARENT INFORMATION EVENING
Kokoda Challenge Association Our history Not for profit organisation 7 th  year of operation Volunteer based organisation and KCYP facilitators are volunteers  Self funded through the Kokoda Challenge event  we receive no  Government Funding  Supported by organisations like Relationship Australia and Currumbin   RSL 152 young people have participated in  the KCYP in 6 years to date
Kokoda Challenge Association Our values Endurance:   We believe that tests of endurance are a way to promote personal growth. Courage:   We support and encourage our people to stay the course even when times are tough. Sacrifice:   We are an organisation that is built on the sacrifice of volunteers and the community spirit this inspires. Mateship:   We believe in the value of teamwork and of  providing support for each other. Environment:   We value the natural environment and aim for  all our activities to have a minimal environmental impact. Youth:   We believe in the potential of our youth to create  a positive future.
Kokoda Challenge Youth Program How it works: Young people from diverse backgrounds 14 month commitment   First 6 months physical training each Sunday 2 peak experiences   Kokoda Challenge and trip to Papua New Guinea 8 months Community Service
Kokoda Challenge  Youth Program Program Objectives  (what we hope the kids achieve) Understand  that in life you get out what you put in Understand consequence of choices made Learn Kokoda values of Endurance, Courage, Mateship and Sacrifice Develop skills & understanding of teamwork, Leadership,  Discipline, Cooperation and Tolerance Learn about the significance of Australias military  campaigns in Kokoda and PNG Learn more about themselves and improve their level of  self-awareness Improve physical fitness Develop an appreciation for the environment
Weekly Training Each week Start times and drop off locations Transport to walking locations   may need parents to assist Essentials:  Back pack 3 litres of water Sunscreen Nutritious lunch and snacks Rain poncho Uniform (including hat) Personal first aid Sunday will consist of bushwalking, intermingled  with team activities Mid week Training Session
Weekly Training Code of Conduct No: Aggressive behaviour  Derogatory behaviour  Disrespectful comments  Violence Mobile phones Electronics  Must wear uniform (including hat and sunscreen) Consequences for breaking code of conduct or unacceptable behaviour
Kokoda Challenge Youth Program Kay Dates and experiences: Camp Weekend  Night Walk (40kms)  Papua New Guinea:  18 th  September  29 th   October

Evaluation of the Kokoda Kids KCYP is a competitive program Process of evaluating the KK Criteria - commitment (turning up each week) - teamwork  - personal development - work book - Kokoda Challenge rating Final selection ranking
Papua New Guinea Kokoda Track Walk 3 teams of 20-22 walking one day apart Brisbane branches, GC Branches & Tweed +Vic 8 days walking the track and 1-2 days in Kokoda Strong physical and historical experience Kokoda Spirit are our tour guide Porters will be supplied to KKs as one between 4
Papua New Guinea Beach Head Tour  Village Experience  20-24 young people  Arrive in Popendetta, travel to Buna and Ovi for 2-3 days, trek back to Kokoda Village via Isurava (2nights) and remain in Fala, helping at the school and hospital for another 4 days in Kokoda Village. Strong Cultural and historical experience Organise and host the annual Kokoda Games
Community Service Oct  July one Sunday per month Working as a group other not-for-profit organisations Essential for graduation from program Months of May and June are for KKs to organise themselves
Cost of KCYP The costs parents can expect $20 camp fee due by week 2 $200 for passport  $60 - $100 for full medical prior to PNG $60 - $100 for medication injections $60 - $100 for medications eg: malaria tablets, water purification tablets, etc Purchase of small equipment items Footwear for participation (may need new shoes during season) Supply of essentials for weekly training (food, sunscreen, etc)
Parents Responsibilities How you can help Pick up and drop off to training Support weekly with motivation and encouragement Kokoda Challenge  support crew Assist with transport to walking locations Organise and manage fundraising BBQs at Bunnings Volunteer at the 2012 Kokoda Challenge
